Chapter 15: The Journey Begins

1104 Words
Noelle stood at the edge of Eldoria, the morning fog clinging to the ground like a blanket. The air was damp, but it felt different today. It was as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for the inevitable storm that loomed just beyond the horizon. The journey north was dangerous, and Noelle knew it would take everything she had to face the unknown. But she couldn’t turn back—not now, not when her people needed her. Her horse, a strong black steed named Sable, snorted beneath her as she gently patted its neck. She felt the weight of the decision she had made, but the pull of responsibility outweighed any doubts she might have had. This wasn’t just about the village of Eldoria anymore. It was about a greater darkness that threatened everything she loved. And in the back of her mind, she could almost hear Alexander’s voice—stern and filled with worry. But Noelle had made up her mind. She had to go. The path ahead would take her through forests and mountains, where bandits had already begun to make their presence known. The dark magic that had begun to seep into the land would only make things worse. Noelle couldn’t afford to hesitate, and yet, a small part of her still wondered if she had made the right choice. "Are we ready, Princess?" Arlen’s voice cut through her thoughts. The young council member had been appointed to join her on the journey, along with a small group of soldiers. Their mission was to find the source of the darkness, and Noelle had insisted that they travel quickly. Noelle nodded. "We leave now. No delays." The small group of soldiers stood at attention, their armor gleaming in the early morning light. Their faces were set with determination, but Noelle could see the fear beneath the surface. It was not the fear of physical harm—these soldiers were trained for battle. No, it was something else. Something they couldn’t name. They had all heard the rumors. The attacks on the northern villages. The vanishing of people. The darkness that seemed to stretch farther than anyone had imagined. "We’ll make it through this," Noelle said, her voice calm but unwavering. She turned to Arlen, who had remained close by, ever the dutiful aide. "Arlen, I need you to stay alert. Gather information about the traveler. We need to know who or what he is before we reach the northern borders." "I understand, Princess," Arlen replied, his voice steady, though she could see the slight edge of nervousness in his eyes. With that, the group began to move, the heavy sound of their boots echoing in the stillness of the early morning. The sun had just begun to rise fully, casting a warm glow across the landscape. But Noelle couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just the calm before the storm. As they traveled, the land began to change. The dense forests that bordered Eldoria gave way to open plains, the grass bending in the wind like the waves of an ocean. Noelle kept her gaze straight ahead, but her thoughts were never far from the man who had so greatly affected her life: Alexander. She couldn’t deny that his warning had shaken her. He had begged her not to go, not to leave him behind. But how could she stay when so many were in danger? Her thoughts turned to the time she had spent with him—those brief moments in Avalon, before the burden of her title had pulled her away. His cold demeanor, his harsh words, his unyielding pride. He had made it clear that he didn’t need her—didn’t want her—near him. And yet, Noelle couldn’t help but feel that there was more to his coldness than met the eye. The Heartless Prince. What a cruel title. But she had seen glimpses of the man beneath the monster. The man who had suffered, who had been shaped by forces beyond his control. Noelle couldn’t stop wondering—was Alexander tied to the darkness in some way? Was his curse a part of this ancient magic? She had so many questions, but she couldn’t answer them on her own. She needed him. She needed to understand what was happening, and Alexander, whether he liked it or not, might hold the key. As they continued their journey northward, Noelle felt the weight of her decision settle in her chest. She knew the road ahead would be fraught with danger, but there was no turning back now. She was in this for the long haul, for the safety of her people and for the truth that had yet to be revealed. --- As the group reached the outskirts of the forest, the air grew colder. The trees loomed tall and dark, their gnarled branches twisting like fingers reaching toward the sky. Noelle’s instincts screamed at her, warning her of the unseen dangers that lurked within the shadows. But she pushed those thoughts aside. She had come too far to be deterred by fear. "Stay close," she ordered, her voice firm. "We’re entering a dangerous part of the forest. Be on the lookout for anything unusual." The soldiers nodded, their eyes scanning the treeline. The silence of the forest was unsettling, the only sound being the soft crunch of leaves underfoot. Noelle’s heart beat faster as they ventured deeper into the woods. Something was out there. She could feel it. The air was thick with an unnatural stillness, as if the forest itself was waiting for something to happen. A rustling sound broke the silence, and Noelle’s hand instinctively went to the sword at her side. "Stay alert," she whispered. Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows—a tall, cloaked figure with a hood that obscured their face. The group froze, every muscle tensed, ready for a fight. The figure stepped forward slowly, their movements unnaturally smooth, as if they weren’t entirely human. The cloak billowed around them, and Noelle’s instincts screamed again—this was no ordinary traveler. "Who goes there?" Noelle called, her voice steady but filled with authority. The figure paused for a moment before slowly lifting their head, revealing a face Noelle had never seen before. Their eyes gleamed unnaturally bright, a strange and unsettling shade of silver. A chill ran down Noelle’s spine as the figure smiled, though there was no warmth in the expression. "I am the one who waits," the figure said, their voice low and smooth, like silk. "And I am here for you, Princess Noelle."
