Chapter 6: The Bargain

868 Words
Noelle’s pulse thundered in her ears as Alexander’s words hung in the air. His commanding presence, amplified by the soldiers flanking him, left little room for negotiation. Yet, she knew she couldn’t simply go with him—not without understanding his intentions. “I don’t belong to anyone,” Noelle said, her voice steady despite her fear. “Why should I go with you?” Alexander raised an eyebrow, clearly unused to defiance. “You’re not being asked,” he replied, his tone sharp. “You have a gift, and Avalon has need of it.” Kaisen stepped forward, his hand instinctively moving to the hilt of his sword. “She’s not going anywhere,” he said, his voice like steel. “If you want her, you’ll have to go through me.” The tension in the air grew palpable as Alexander regarded Kaisen, his expression unreadable. Finally, he gestured for his soldiers to lower their weapons. “I don’t want a fight,” he said, his voice cold but measured. “But make no mistake—if she refuses, there will be consequences.” Noelle stepped between the two men, her hands raised in a gesture of peace. “Stop,” she said firmly. “I’ll go with you, but on one condition.” Alexander’s gaze sharpened. “You’re in no position to bargain.” “I disagree,” Noelle countered, surprising even herself with her boldness. “If you force me, I won’t help you. But if you allow me to come willingly, I’ll consider assisting you.” The corners of Alexander’s mouth twitched, as though he found her audacity amusing. “And what do you want in return?” “I want my village left alone,” Noelle said. “No soldiers, no threats. Eldoria is my home, and I won’t abandon it to your whims.” Alexander studied her for a long moment, his piercing gaze making her feel as though he could see straight into her soul. Finally, he nodded. “Very well. Eldoria will remain untouched. But you’ll answer to me—and only me.” --- As the group set off toward Avalon, Noelle sat atop a horse alongside Alexander. She kept her distance, her thoughts racing as the landscape blurred around them. The prince rode with an air of detachment, his eyes fixed ahead, but she could feel his presence like a storm waiting to break. “Why me?” Noelle asked after a long stretch of silence. “Surely you have healers in Avalon.” Alexander didn’t look at her as he replied, “None like you.” “That’s not an answer,” she pressed. “You’re not like other healers,” he said curtly. “Your abilities go beyond simple remedies. You can heal wounds that should be fatal, illnesses that defy explanation. We need someone like you.” Noelle frowned. “And if I refuse?” Alexander’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, she thought he wouldn’t answer. “You won’t.” --- By nightfall, they reached a campsite nestled within a dense forest. The soldiers set up tents and prepared a fire, their movements efficient and practiced. Noelle sat on a fallen log, her arms wrapped around herself as she watched the flames dance. Alexander approached her, his expression inscrutable. “You should eat,” he said, holding out a plate of food. “I’m not hungry,” she replied, her tone icy. “You’ll need your strength,” he said, his voice softening slightly. “The journey to Avalon isn’t an easy one.” Noelle hesitated before taking the plate, her fingers brushing against his. The contact was brief, but it sent an unexpected jolt through her. She quickly looked away, focusing on the food in her lap. Alexander sat across from her, his sharp gaze never leaving her. “Why do you resist?” he asked suddenly. “Because I don’t trust you,” Noelle said without hesitation. “You barged into my life and demanded I leave everything behind. Trust isn’t earned that way.” Alexander’s lips curved into a faint, humorless smile. “Perhaps not. But trust is a luxury I can’t afford.” “Then what do you want from me?” Noelle asked, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “I want you to survive,” Alexander said simply. “And in doing so, ensure the survival of many others.” His words were cryptic, leaving Noelle with more questions than answers. But something in his tone—an edge of vulnerability buried beneath the cold exterior—made her pause. --- As the camp settled into silence, Noelle lay awake beneath the stars, her thoughts a whirlwind of uncertainty. She had left everything she knew behind, stepping into a world of danger and intrigue with a prince who was as enigmatic as he was infuriating. But despite her fear, she couldn’t shake the feeling that their paths were intertwined by more than coincidence. The Heartless Prince might hold the key to a destiny far greater than she had ever imagined. And perhaps, just perhaps, she might hold the key to his frozen heart. --- End of Chapter 6
