Beneath the Ashen sky

846 Words
The skies bled fire. From the shattered peak of the Ember Spire, the creature rose—massive and coiled, forged from smoke and living magma. Vharos, the Hunger in Flame, had broken the prison of fire. The world trembled beneath its scream. Kael stood at the edge of the crumbling platform, his arms still glowing with the burning gauntlet formed by his mark. The others watched, frozen, as the beast uncoiled its wings—vast and skeletal—and soared skyward. "That’s a god," Ryn whispered. "That’s death," Veyra corrected, tightening her grip on her blade. A second explosion rocked the spire. The support columns cracked, and chunks of the platform tumbled into the storm below. The Storm Wraith, hovering just beyond the shattered wall, adjusted position as Captain Aeris Thorn shouted through the comm: "We’ve got to evac now! Whatever that thing is, we can’t fight it from here!" Kael turned. “I can. But I need time.” Ryn ran to him. “You’re not sacrificing yourself.” “I’m not. I’m waking up.” Flames licked his skin without burning. The memories from the orb, from the Flamekeepers, surged inside him. He reached down, placed his hand to the stone, and whispered the ancient words that had once sealed the gods: Vel’shara vhen arru'mek. The spire responded. Rings of molten energy spiraled upward, encasing Kael. A massive sigil blazed around him, the ground cracking with power. The fire didn’t consume him—it obeyed. He looked toward the sky where Vharos circled, gathering strength. "You wanted the fire sky?" he whispered. "Then burn with me." --- Veyra dragged Ryn back to the Wraith as Kael began to ascend, lifted by pillars of flame. The platform below disintegrated entirely. The crew scrambled to pull Kael back, but Ryn stopped them. “He’s doing something only he can do.” Thorn pulled the Wraith back just in time as a blast of pure heat erupted from the spire’s heart. Kael rose into the sky, now blazing with energy. Vharos turned its head, sensing the threat. Its voice, more thought than sound, slithered into Kael’s mind: You are the ember of a dead world. I am the flame that ends it. Kael raised his hands. A burning sword formed between them—a weapon made from the Spire’s core. “No,” he replied. “I’m the flame that remembers.” Vharos dove. They met in midair. The collision shattered clouds. Energy rippled across the skylands. Kael swung the blade with precision, driving it into Vharos’ chest. The god shrieked, the wound erupting with molten fire. But Vharos struck back. Claws raked Kael’s side. He spun through the air, plummeting, until a jet burst upward from the Storm Wraith. A grappling hook shot out—Ryn’s hands steady on the cannon. It caught Kael’s belt. “Hold him!” Ryn shouted. “Lift him!” Thorn bellowed. As Kael dangled, Vharos twisted above. The wound was sealing. “He’s healing,” Kael gasped. “I need to reach the core.” “What core?!” Veyra yelled. Kael looked down at the Spire. “The fire isn’t just power—it’s memory. If I reach the Heartfire, I can bind him again.” Thorn banked the Wraith in a hard turn. “Then we drop you in.” --- The ship descended back toward the crumbling core of the Spire. Kael leapt, flames cushioning his fall. He smashed through the layers of crystal, down to the inner sanctum—the source of the Flameborne legacy. It was a pool of living fire, deep and ancient. The same color as his dreams. Vharos followed, crashing into the Spire. The chamber trembled. Kael stood before the fire. “I was made for this.” He stepped into it. The flames wrapped around him. His eyes burned gold. His skin became light. The fire whispered his name—not as a warning, but a welcome. He turned, reborn. Vharos reared back. Kael struck. --- From above, the crew saw a column of fire erupt from the heart of the Spire. It pierced the sky, driving Vharos upward, away, into the storm. The god screamed, bound again by chains of light. Kael floated in the center, arms outstretched. “I seal you, not in stone, but in flame. A warning. A memory. A vow.” Vharos vanished into the void. The fire receded. The storm broke. Kael fell— —and was caught in the arms of Ryn Solar, who had leapt from the Wraith into the sky. “You i***t,” she said. “Don’t ever do that again.” He smiled weakly. “No promises.” --- They landed. The Spire was quiet now, its energy spent. Veyra sheathed her blade. Thorn lit a smoke. “You think it’s over?” Ryn asked. Kael looked to the horizon, where a new fire now burned in the sky—not of war, but of awakening. “No,” he said. “It’s just beginning.” --- To be continued...
