Chapter 5: Theft

We couldn't sleep in that uncompleted building, it looked even worse the what we just faced. I didn't want to be ridiculed for r**e or something, I was really scared of that environment. The only option we had was to go to aunt Felicia's house, I wasn't sure if she'll accommodate us but it was worth trying.

Aunt Felicia's house wasn't too distant from where we were, we just had to be careful, I thought. But why should we be??? It wasn't like we had anything to give to thieves, no phones or bags, nothing!!! we just had ourselves. That road was lonely, I was scared but lily wasn't. She walked as if her mother owned the road, so bold. I envied her boldness. Our walk was an exhausting one, there was no strength in us.

We got to Aunt Felicia's house and knocked but there wasn't any response, the gate was open which could only mean she was in but wasn't responding to our knocks. I went to her backyard, looked through the window and saw her looking all weird and creepy, I wasn't shocked, she was a witch doctor. She sat like how Buddhists would sit when praying. I didn't want to disturb the creepy lady, we had to leave.

"Where would we go to know??? Lily asked with her sleeping eyes wanting to close fully, I had to slap her forehead, she got the shock and gained herself again. There's only one place I could think of, "David's house".

My heart skipped a little, I didn't understand that feeling. I overheard some of our classmates describing his address to themselves some time ago in class for his last birthday party, I caught everything they said and besides he said we could come to stay with him, this was an open offer, no dulling.

" We can only go to David's house, I say to Lily. " "'Ooooouuuu!!!....she said this giving her mouth that "o" shape, slowly moving her brows.

"Hmmmmmm!!! Vanessa your..... Are you..... gonna....it's alright, she concluded.

"What??? He gave us an open offer... And besides, that's the only option we have. Lily knew I wanted to go to David's house without even being invited. We were sisters of the same heart, quite close.

When we got to David's house I didn't know which was his flat, the gate was open but they weren't any lights anywhere, I guess no one had generators. We looked around the compound, it was a 4 flat building. I wasn't sure which was David's flat. Someone walked down the stairs, it was a lady, she smelt like she seemed to be heading out, but...by this time???

"Hello....good evening, I greeted. Please I'm looking for a guy, He's name's David. She looked at me, smiled and then said...

"He lives in the second flat, she gestured.

"Thank you, I say, and went straight to his flat. The lady kept looking at us wondering why we were looking for David, it was exclusively obvious. We knocked at his door, someone came out but it wasn't the David we knew, it was someone else, He's name could be David but he wasn't my David.

"Who are you guys looking for??? The youngster asked. We looked disappointed, it wasn't David but it was David.

"Ummmmm....no one, I say. We'll just take out leave now.

I was so disappointed, the young man didn't even look like David one bit.

"Vannie!!! ...the description you heard from your classmates was wrong, you didn't listen well... Lily says looking annoyed. We were lost no doubt, we had to know where to go that night, we had to sleep probably by a peaceful roadside, it wasn't safe but we had no choice. I wasn't with a watch or a phone to know what the time was, but it seemed like the time was 9 pm or thereabout. Lily was starving, and we were starving but with no money to get something to eat, the only option we had was to take what was not ours, that was our first teenage theft.

There was a shop next to where we stood, it had every assorted drink you could ever think of, they were unnecessarily tempting and Besides, lily was hungry I had to do something. I went to the shop and asked...

"Pls do you guys sell mosquito killers here???

"sure!!!...we have almost everything, a good-looking young lady said to me.

" Ooh OK... How much is it??? I asked.

"Which one exactly?? She enquired

"Anyone would do, I say. As she went into the shop, I grabbed a big loaf of bread, and 3 cans of drink and then threw them at lily. Ahe was at the other side, the lady came out with a special mosquito killer brand" mobile".

"This one's the best, she says. Giving it to me, I.....

" Ummm Ma!, there's no need, I just remembered we already have this kind at home, I say."

Ok...she said giving me that no worries look.

I walked to where lily stood, we had to go somewhere far from there to eat what I stole, I didn't feel guilty, I had no choice.
