Chapter 6: Our Helper

I wasn't feeling sleepy, I was still scared of the "peaceful roadside". It had street lights but it wasn't enough. A family walked passed us, I envied them vastly and felt like throwing stones at them. They looked all happy and rich, that's their business I said in my mind, I was jealous. I was still looking envious of this "family" when a woman tapped me on the shoulder.

"Heyyy!!! Young lady what are the both of you doing outside by this time??? she asked.

We were mute at first but then...

"We don't have a home, we ran out of our home, I say.

" And why was that?? She asked looking concerned.

" You girls can't stay out here, it's too dangerous because your too young, She says.

"So where's your home??? She asked.

" It's in phase 1, Lily answered.

" Phase 1? she asked widening her eyes.

"That's quite far from here, so why did you guys leave the house??? she asked curiously.

" Sorry Ma, but... we don't know you from anywhere so why should we answer your questions? Vanessa asked.

The woman overlooked the disrespectful tone Vanessa used to speak back at her, and then...

" I might not know you but it would be inhumane of me to let you girls sleep outside, you can follow me to my house if you want, but it's fine if you don't want to, she implored. She said this looking like my mother when she "managed" to talk back at her husband. I thought of what the woman said for some minutes, it was so obvious that I was lost in thoughts.

"Vanessa??? Heyy!!! What are you thinking about, Lily asked.

" Ummmm Ma, we would come with you, after all, we have no choice...Vanessa admits.

" OK then let's be on our way, when we get to my house you'll tell me everything I need you to know about your family, she says.

The lady said this like she initially knew me, or met me somewhere some time ago, I found what she said strange though but I kept my cool, I didn't want to spoil my chance of having a roof over my head.

We got to her house, it was flashy. It had fine curtains, a big plasma TV, nice chairs, a centre table and some designs on the wall, the house was sharp.

" Feel at home, she said to us.

"I'll go get your rooms ready, she quickly walked upstairs to ready our rooms. I couldn't stop admiring the house, it was too flashy for just a young lady, I kept wondering if she was either married or had a white-collar job. She came downstairs, I guess she was done with the room.

"ooh!!!... I forgot myself, I didn't introduce myself to you people, did I??? she asked.

" No, you didn't, we both said.

"Ooh OK...I'm Lilian. she announces.

"I forgot to ask. What are your names please? she asked.

" Vanessa and she's my younger sister, lily. I say.

"You both have wonderful names, Vanessa and lily, nice ones, she admits.

I noticed something really strange, she kept looking at my body, I didn't feel comfortable. I thought there was something in my body that she was looking at. I asked if anything was wrong with what I wore, but she said no. She took us to our room, it was so luxurious, there was an Air conditioner in it, a very wide bed, a table I guess was meant for keeping stuff, and what I've always wanted, a very big body mirror.

" Pls girls, Make yourself comfortable, she reminds.

I didn't know this lady well, but I knew I would enjoy my stay at her place, wasn't sure of lily.

We kept admiring the room when she came in to ask us what we would like to eat, we weren't hungry, what we stole filled our bellies, food wasn't our problem at that time.

" Ok then, I'll just go take a shower and then go to bed, she walked out.

" Jesus!!!! Lily?, See this house, It's too fine...haven't seen anything like that before. I was thrilled with the excitement of how gorgeous the house was. The outside of the house wasn't as flashy as the inside, but it wasn't bad either, it was in between.

"Vannie aren't we supposed to take our bath??? Lily asked.

"Ahhhhh!!! Lily is not right, she didn't tell us to, we can't just walk into someone's bathroom without being invited to use it. Vanessa added.

" Invited???? Lily asked You don't invite people to use bathrooms and besides, that's the bathroom just there. You know what??? I'm going in. I Gotta take my bath, I'm all sweaty and dirty. Lily made me look like I was her younger sister, she seemed smarter at that time but she was right anyway, people don't get invited to use the bathroom they just use it, especially when it's in the room where you sleep in.

We took our bath that night but they weren't anything we could use to clean our bodies. In our shiver, we had a knock at our room door, it was Lilian. she reminded us to take our bath but we already did, she came with 2 towels and nightgowns for both of us and then stepped out.
