THE WOLF INSIDE ME

810 Words
“Your wolf?” The words barely left Aurelia’s lips. She stood in the hallway, one palm pressed hard against her chest. The voice was gone now, but the feeling lingered, electric under her skin. Something inside her had woken up—something that’d been so quiet for years she’d almost forgotten it was there. Draven stepped closer. “Aurelia.” She flinched backwards. “No.” He halted. Her voice shook. “What’s happening to me?” “I don’t know yet.” “You said I wasn’t wolfless.” “I said your wolf was there.” “So why couldn’t I hear her?” His jaw tightened. “Because she was sealed.” She blinked at him. “Sealed?” “Yes.” “By who?” “I don’t know.” Fear rushed up her throat. “You don’t know?” He shook his head. “No.” “Then how do you know she was sealed?” Draven’s eyes went dark. “Because I knew you before it happened.” Her heart kicked against her ribs. “Before what happened?” But Draven just looked away. Another wall. Another secret that everyone seemed to hold except her. Aurelia pressed her hands to her temples. “I can’t do this.” Her breath came quick and shallow. “None of this makes sense.” Draven took one step towards her. “Aurelia, look at me.” She shook her head, squeezing her eyes shut. “No.” “You can.” Her knees gave out. The world tilted. Draven caught her a second before she hit the floor. Pain exploded through her head. Aurelia gasped and reached for his shirt, desperate for something solid. “Make it stop.” Strong arms wrapped around her. “I’m here.” “It hurts.” “I know.” “I don’t want it.” His voice was steady. “I know.” She buried her face in his chest. For once, she didn’t give a damn that he was the Lycan King or that she wasn’t supposed to trust him. She just felt scared. And in some twisted way, his arms were the only safe thing she had. Draven held her tight, tracing slow circles on her back. “Breathe, Aurelia.” She tried. “Again.” A shaky breath. Another. “Good.” The pain began to ebb. She didn’t move, pressed close, listening to his heartbeat. God, it sounded familiar. Like she’d known that rhythm forever. Her voice was small. “Why?” Draven looked down. “Why what?” “Why does my wolf know you?” He froze. Aurelia lifted her head and stared at him. “Tell me.” He met her eyes. “Because she remembered me before you did.” Her chest tightened. “What does that even mean?” “When they stole your memories, your wolf didn’t forget me completely.” “So…she remembers everything?” “Not everything,” Draven said quietly. “But she remembers me.” Aurelia turned away, stunned. Her own wolf knew him. Her body reacted to him. Her dreams, too. And yet—all her mind saw was a stranger. She reached out, touching his chest. “Did she know you when we were kids?” He nodded. “She liked being around me.” Aurelia’s breath caught. “Liked you?” His features softened. “She trusted me.” She looked at her feet. “And now?” He ran his knuckle gently along her cheek. “Now, she knows I’m here.” Her heart pounded. She stepped back, lightheaded. “I still don’t get it.” “You don’t have to understand everything tonight.” Draven’s voice was calm, certain. She shook her head. “But I need to know what happened to me.” He nodded. “I know.” “Who sealed my wolf?” “I’ll find out.” “And who took my memories?” His expression hardened. “Them too.” Aurelia searched his face. “Promise?” He didn’t even blink. “Promise.” Something in his voice made her believe it. Then, just as the room stilled, a voice echoed in her mind again—louder this time. So much closer. Aurelia went rigid. Her eyes went huge. “Draven…” Her voice was barely a whisper. He was instantly at her side. “What is it?” She couldn’t move. She barely breathed. Her wolf’s voice rang clear as daylight. One word—heavy with meaning, sharp with longing. Mate. She sucked in a breath, hand pressed hard to her heart. Draven watched her, worry flickering in his eyes. “What did she say?” Aurelia looked up, unable to speak. Her wolf had just called the most dangerous man alive— mate.
