The alarm rang again for the umpteenth time, and Rose reached out to turn it off once more.
Then boom...
A bell went off in her head, causing her to jerk upright.
"Goodness, work!"
She jumped off the bed, grabbing her phone to check the time.
Behold, it was already 7:15 a.m.
"Oh Rose, oh Rose, are you seriously going to mess this up?"
She scolded herself mentally before rushing into the bathroom for a quick bath.
"I can't believe I'm going to be late on my first day at work."
Mrs. Rakeem would probably think she was acting arrogant again.
Rose grumbled, clearly annoyed at herself.
Well, this was the result of being idle for a long time. Now she was slacking.
She swiftly got dressed in a pair of plain blue palazzo trousers, a white shirt, and a corset top, paired with black stilettos. She grabbed her bag and her one and only wig—a shoulder-length bone-straight.
Taking one last look at herself in the mirror, she couldn't help feeling proud of her figure.
But there was no time to admire herself.
Maybe another day.
She hurried outside and locked the door.
Then...
Damn.
She still had to wait for a taxi.
Rose had never wished to own a car so badly in her entire life.
She walked down the short street to the main road.
Oh Jesus, see finish no pass this one.
Otherwise, what was an obviously classy lady like her doing on the roadside waiting for a cab?
By now it was already 7:55 a.m.
Even if she managed to get a taxi immediately, she still wouldn't make it before eight.
It seemed she needed to start ordering Bolt rides in advance.
But that was another expense.
She just hoped her savings would take pity on her until her first salary arrived.
Otherwise, she'd really have to start trekking to work.
"Hey, Miss Olumide. Good morning. Heading somewhere?"
Oh God of Elijah, blessed be Your name.
Rose almost cried in relief.
It was the guy from the other day.
"Hey, hello. Good morning."
Then, deciding to be shameless for once, she added,
"Uhm, could you please drop me off at the same place as yesterday?"
She was already opening the door before finishing her sentence.
Interesting.
Yoseph watched her.
I haven't even agreed yet.
Nor have I asked you to get in.
Rose plopped down on the passenger seat and let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding.
"Well, let's just say I know you wouldn't refuse me. Not after seeing a damsel in distress."
"Hmm. So confident, huh?"
"Of course."
"But who was it that thought she wouldn't be hired just yesterday?"
Yoseph asked as he merged into traffic.
"Oh, that reminds me."
She brightened immediately.
"You really are my lucky charm. I got the job!"
"Guess which position I was given."
She flashed him a toothy grin.
"Hmm."
He pretended to think.
"With your not-so-bright brain, I think they made you a cleaner."
Rose's face scrunched up in annoyance.
Seeing her expression, Yoseph burst out laughing.
"Anyways, I won't let you ruin my good mood."
She flipped her hair dramatically.
"You're looking at none other than the secretary to the Chief Executive Officer of Dekans Tech Ltd."
Yoseph fell silent for a moment.
Then he burst into laughter again.
"It seems the CEO should prepare himself for the mess you're about to make."
"Whatever."
Rose rolled her eyes.
As he pulled up in front of the company, she glanced at the time.
"Oh goodness! Ten minutes past eight. Mrs. Rakeem will kill me."
"Who is Mrs. Rakeem?"
"Oh, don't ask."
Rose groaned.
"She thinks I slept my way into the secretary position. I'll tell you the details another day. For now, bye."
Before Yoseph could respond, she hurried out of the car and rushed into the building.
Yoseph chuckled.
She really was a silly girl.
Twice now she had entered a stranger's car without asking his name.
Then there was Mrs. Rakeem.
Perhaps he needed to have a conversation with her.
He drove into the VIP garage, got out, and took the private elevator to his office.
As he passed the secretary's cabin outside his office, he noticed it was empty.
Stepping into his office, he found Akin arranging documents on his desk.
"Where is she?"
"Uhm... good morning, sir."
"I asked where she is."
Who is she?
Akin wondered.
Then it clicked.
Ah.
The CEO's hidden treasure.
"Uhm, sir, I think she went to get coffee."
Yoseph stared at him.
"What do you mean she went to get coffee? I didn't ask for coffee. Besides, didn't I instruct you not to let her in here yet?"
"Oh, that."
Akin hesitated.
"It seems Mrs. Rakeem asked her to get coffee for everyone on the—"
He stopped speaking.
The boss was visibly growing angrier.
"Akin..." Yoseph drawled.
"Yes, sir."
"Didn't I ask you to take care of my person? How did she end up getting coffee for everyone? Did I hire her to distribute coffee?"
"Sorry, sir. I'll handle it now."
"No need."
Yoseph waved him off.
He wanted to see how she handled the situation herself.
Or whether she was really going to let herself be bullied.
Akin was surprised.
So the boss wasn't going to interfere?
These two were certainly interesting.
Shaking his head, he continued reading the day's schedule.
Stepping out of the pantry with over twenty cups of coffee arranged on a trolley, Rose made her way toward the HR department.
Mrs. Rakeem had told her it was company policy to buy coffee for everyone as a way of showing appreciation after getting employed.
And the lazy Rose who hadn't bothered reading the handbook properly had believed her.
Arriving at the floor, her feet were already aching in her six-inch heels.
To make matters worse, she'd had to use the stairs because one of the elevators had developed a fault.
"Hey everyone, I brought coffee!"
Dalia hurried over.
"Hey girl, you shouldn't have done this. Aren't you tired?"
"Besides, not everyone drinks coffee. Some people prefer tea. To be honest, this is unnecessary. Most of them won't even appreciate it."
Rose froze.
"Wait."
"You mean it's not company policy for me to buy coffee for everyone in HR to show my gratitude?"
Dalia stared at her.
"Who told you that?"
"Didn't you read the employee handbook they gave you?"
"Well..."
Rose bit her lip.
Dalia sighed.
"No wonder you were fooled."
"Where are the coffees?"
The two women turned to see Mrs. Rakeem glaring daggers at them.
"Ma, I just found out it's not in the company policy to buy coffee for everyone."
"Oh? Are you questioning me now?"
Mrs. Rakeem folded her arms.
"You think just because you have connections with the higher-ups you can speak to everyone however you like?"
The moment she said that, people started exchanging glances.
"Hmm, no wonder she landed such a high position."
"And here I was thinking she was exceptionally qualified."
"It seems sleeping with powerful men really works."
The comments grew harsher.
Dalia attempted to defend her, but Mrs. Rakeem immediately cut her off.
Taking a deep breath, Rose lifted her head and said,
"Ma, it seems you've misunderstood me."
