Maya's Pov
“Let me go!” I yanked my arm free from the man’s iron grip, backing away as quickly as my trembling legs would let me.
“You need to listen to me,” he said, his voice was calm, even as the air around us seemed to thrum with danger. His dark eyes bore into mine, his expression unreadable.
“I don’t need to listen to anyone,” I spat, my pulse racing. “You think you can just show up and tell me my life isn’t real? That I’m... I’m a werewolf? That I’m carrying the child of some Alpha I’ve never met?”
“It’s the truth, Maya,” he said evenly, taking a step toward me.
“No! Take me back home please” I took another step back, my back hitting the wall of my small apartment. The room felt suffocating, as if the walls were closing in. My mind was spinning out of control. I wanted to scream, to run, but my body felt frozen.
I could still feel the burn of energy coursing through me after he ripped the necklace away. The world had shifted in an instant, and I couldn’t make sense of it.
Nothing made sense anymore. I was supposed to be helping a family by being a surrogate, not caught up in some twisted supernatural nightmare.
“How do I even know you’re telling the truth?” I said, my voice shaking. “How do I know you’re not lying to me?”
His eyes softened, but his stance didn’t waver. “You feel it, don’t you? The pull, the change inside of you. You’ve known something was wrong for weeks now. That’s your wolf waking up. And this…this is your home. Amongst us.”
I shook my head, refusing to believe him. But deep down, I knew he was right. I had felt it, something stirring inside me, something primal, something I couldn’t control. I had tried to dismiss it, but it had only grown stronger.
And now, without the necklace, it was like a dam had broken.
“Who are you?” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
The man straightened, his face serious. “My name is Alec. I’m from the silver moon pack. I’ve been sent here to protect you.”
“Protect me from what?”
“From those who will come for you,” Alec said, his eyes darkening. “You’re carrying Alpha’s child. That child is powerful, more powerful than you realize. Other packs will want to use you and the baby for their own gain. Kane wants to keep you safe.”
The word safe rang hollow in my ears. I didn’t feel safe. I didn’t feel anything but fear and confusion. This wasn’t supposed to happen. My life was supposed to be normal, predictable.
The tension in the room was unbearable. Alec was staring at me, waiting for a response, but I didn’t have one.
I couldn’t process any of this. My mind was a mess of fear and disbelief, and my body felt like it was on the verge of breaking apart.
“I need... I need time,” I stammered, my breath coming in short gasps. “I can’t just... I can’t…”
Before I could finish, the air around us shifted, sharp and cold, like a knife slicing through the atmosphere. I froze, my senses flaring, picking up on something, something dangerous.
Alec stiffened. His eyes turned toward the door, his entire body going still. “They’re here.”
My heart lurched in my chest. “Who’s here?”
Alec’s voice was low, almost a growl. “Rogues.”
“What…” I started to ask, but Alec cut me off.
“No time to explain.” He grabbed my arm, pulling me toward the door. “We need to leave. Now.”
But before we could take another step, the door crashed open, splintering into pieces as two figures stormed into the apartment.
I gasped, stumbling back, my heart pounding in my ears. The intruders moved quickly, their eyes glowing a strange, unnatural amber. They were fast, too fast to be human.
Are they….. Wolves?
Instinctively, I pressed myself against the wall, my mind screaming at me to run, but my body wouldn’t cooperate. Every muscle was locked in place, frozen in fear.
Alec growled low in his throat, his stance shifting into something more aggressive. He positioned himself between me and the rogues, his eyes never leaving them. “Stay behind me.”
The rogues snarled, their lips curling back to reveal sharp, gleaming teeth. I could feel the hostility radiating off them, thick and suffocating. They weren’t here to talk. They were here for me.
“We don’t want trouble,” Alec said, his voice firm but steady. “But if you try to take her, you’ll regret it.”
One of the rogues sneered. “We don’t need to take her. She’ll come willingly, once we’re done with you.”
Without warning, the rogue lunged at Alec, faster than I could track. Alec dodged, shifting in the blink of an eye, his body twisting and snapping into a wolf, a massive, dark wolf with gleaming fangs.
The room erupted into chaos.
Alec and the rogue wolves collided with a force that shook the walls, their growls and snarls filling the air.
I pressed myself tighter against the wall, my heart hammering so loud I could barely think. Everything was happening too fast, one second Alec was a man, the next he was a wolf, fighting for his life.
I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe.
The rogues were relentless, attacking Alec with brutal precision. But Alec held his ground, biting and slashing with a ferocity that left me speechless. He was fighting for me, fighting to protect me from something I didn’t even fully understand.
One of the rogues broke off from the fight, his glowing eyes locking onto mine. My stomach dropped.
“No,” I whispered, my voice trembling.
The rogue grinned, blood dripping from his mouth. “You’ll come with us, whether you like it or not.”
Before I could react, he charged.
I screamed, my body moving on instinct, but it was too late. He was too fast, too strong. He slammed into me, pinning me to the floor, his claws digging into my shoulders.
Pain shot through me, sharp and blinding, and I cried out, my vision blurring. The world spun around me, the air thick with the scent of blood and dirt.
But beneath the pain, beneath the terror, something else stirred.
The rogue leaned in closer, his breath hot against my ear. “Don’t fight it. We’ll take care of you.”
But I wasn’t listening anymore. I couldn’t. The pain was too much. My body was breaking apart, burning from the inside out, and all I could feel was the pressure building inside me, something clawing its way to the surface.
A scream tore from my throat as the fire inside me blazed hotter, searing through every nerve in my body. I couldn’t hold it back any longer.
The wolf was trying to break free.
