Chapter 18 — The Sinking Trial
The silver pedestal tilted beneath Ariana’s hands, the pulsing council symbols blurring in her vision. Gravity tugged at her as the platform slowly sank toward the yawning shadows below. Her fingers slipped once, then caught on the edge.
Stay calm. Focus. Survive.
Across the labyrinth, Lucas moved quickly but not toward her directly. Instead, his movements triggered subtle shifts in the floating platforms, sending a cascade of momentum that helped steady the pedestal. He wasn’t holding her hand, but he was manipulating the environment to give her a chance.
“You can do this, Ariana,” he whispered, voice carrying across the chamber. “Trust yourself… and your instincts.”
Ariana drew in a shuddering breath. Every muscle in her body screamed, but she forced her fingers to tighten, her legs bracing for the tilt. Slowly, inch by precarious inch, she inched toward the pedestal’s center, where the silver glow was brightest.
Vanessa’s laughter echoed, sharper than ever. “Thought you could outmaneuver me, Ariana? The council may favor you… but I always have the advantage.”
From the shadows, Vanessa had released a series of shadow tendrils, twisting and writhing like serpents, aiming to strike Ariana and disrupt her balance. The council’s symbols flashed violently, reacting to the danger, amplifying the urgency.
Ariana dodged, leapt, and twisted mid-air, narrowly avoiding a tendril that shot past her shoulder. Her mind worked rapidly: Observation, Strategy, Alliances.
She realized the trick: Vanessa was testing her ability to act under simultaneous physical and psychological pressure. The shadows were not just traps they were lessons.
Lucas appeared briefly, a flash of movement on a nearby platform. He didn’t touch her directly, but a small motion of his hand caused a section of the pedestal to shift just enough to counterbalance her weight. Ariana caught herself, surprised.
He’s helping… but not completely revealing his methods.
Her pulse raced. Each second brought the pedestal closer to the shadows below. The council’s omnipresent voice rang out:
“Survival alone is not enough, Ariana Reed. Demonstrate judgment, leadership, and courage simultaneously. Fail in any aspect… and vanish.”
Ariana’s eyes darted toward the shadowed figures blocking her path. There were three possible routes to the pedestal:
The Left Path: Clear of shadows but filled with shifting platforms and mechanical traps.
The Center Path: Most direct, but heavily guarded by shadow tendrils and illusions of Vanessa.
The Right Path: Seemingly safe, but with hidden pressure plates that could trigger the pit below.
Time was running out. The pedestal continued to tilt, threatening to send her plummeting.
Ariana’s mind flashed to Lucas’s subtle guidance during previous trials. He always left the final decision to her. This is my choice… my test.
She inhaled deeply. Center Path.
As she moved forward, Vanessa’s illusions surged. One figure lunged, another blocked her path, and a third appeared to mirror her every step. Ariana’s reflexes and instincts, honed through the past trials, allowed her to identify the real Vanessa through the faint lag in movement.
Ariana twisted mid-air, dodging the true Vanessa’s attack and landing on a stable section of the pedestal. Her fingers finally gripped the glowing silver center.
The platform stabilized instantly. The council symbols flared brighter, bathing the chamber in radiant light.
Ariana exhaled, trembling. She had survived. She had made the right strategic choice.
Vanessa’s laughter faded into a low hiss. “You survived… this time. But remember, Ariana Reed, the council watches, and so do I. Every success is a new target.”
Lucas approached at last, stepping onto the pedestal beside her. His calm gaze met hers. “You’ve grown stronger… faster than expected. But don’t assume this ends here. Every challenge only reveals part of the game.”
Ariana’s chest heaved. She wanted to ask about his motives, about the secrets he seemed to hold but there was no time. The council’s presence intensified, the silver symbols pulsing like a heartbeat.
From the shadows, the hooded council member spoke once more:
“Congratulations, Ariana Reed. You have passed the multi-layered trial. But this is only the beginning. The trials ahead will test not just skill and courage… but the depth of your character, the strength of your alliances, and the limits of your mind.”
Ariana felt a chill.
Then, at the edge of the chamber, a new shadow moved a figure taller, cloaked in dark silver, radiating authority. Ariana had never seen anyone like this before.
The council member’s voice echoed, calm but chilling:
“You will meet her soon… and your decisions will define the future of this academy.”
Ariana’s eyes widened as the figure stepped fully into the light.
It was Vanessa’s ally or perhaps a council enforcer she had yet to face.
The chamber fell silent.
The council’s symbols pulsed brighter than ever.
And Ariana realized, with a mixture of fear and determination:
The real game had only just begun.
