Chapter 13 — The Choice The black card rested heavily in Ariana’s hands, as if the silver letters themselves carried weight. Time to choose. Her mind spun. The second test had ended, but the council wasn’t finished. Lucas’s warning echoed in her memory: “Keep playing their game… or walk away and never return.” Ariana’s pulse raced. Walking away seemed impossible. To leave now was to abandon every chance to uncover the truth about this academy and about herself. Her fingers tightened around the card. The shadows in the room seemed to grow darker, stretching toward her as though testing her resolve. I have to play. I have no choice. Later that night, she stood in the East Wing once again. The faint silver glow from the card had illuminated a path across the polished marble floor, leading her to a room she had never seen before. The door bore the Elite Council’s symbol the same as the cards, now engraved into the wood. Taking a deep breath, Ariana stepped inside. The room was circular, dimly lit, with seven tall chairs surrounding a single black podium. At first, the chairs were empty. Then, one by one, shadows appeared in each seat. Only silhouettes. Ariana’s heart skipped. The council was here. Watching. Waiting. From the far end of the room, Lucas stepped out of the shadows. His presence was calm, almost casual, yet the energy around him was sharp like a blade hidden in plain sight. “You chose to come,” he said, his voice low. “Yes,” Ariana replied, trying to keep her voice steady. “I want to understand the game.” Lucas’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Good. That’s the correct first move.” Ariana frowned slightly. “You know why I’m here?” “Yes,” Lucas admitted. “But not everything. Some things you must discover yourself.” The shadows in the seven chairs shifted. One stood, stepping forward, revealing a hooded figure with piercing eyes. “You are brave,” the figure said, voice resonating through the room. “But courage alone will not save you.” Ariana swallowed. “I’m ready.” The figure moved closer, the silver symbol on the podium glowing faintly. “This council does not forgive mistakes,” the figure said. “Tonight, you will make your first active choice. The choice will define your path in this academy… and determine who becomes your ally.” Ariana felt a cold weight settle on her shoulders. The council wasn’t just testing her skills as hey were testing her judgment. Before she could ask more, a whisper echoed from the shadows: “You may want to trust him… or fear him.” Her eyes flicked to Lucas. “What do you mean?” she asked softly. Lucas’s expression was unreadable. “You’ll see soon enough.” He stepped back, letting the council member lead the session. Ariana’s first choice was revealed: the podium split into three paths. Each pathway held a distinct set of challenges: The Path of Observation _ She would face a series of hidden traps, testing her attention to detail. The Path of Strategy – She would face simulated rival students, requiring tactical thinking to survive. The Path of Alliances – She would have to decide who to trust within the academy, including Lucas and others. Ariana’s heart pounded. Each path promised danger—and revealed information about the academy, the council, and even Lucas. This is it… the first real choice. She hesitated. The council watched in silence. Their eyes, though hidden, seemed to pierce into her mind. Observation… Strategy… Alliances… Her thoughts returned to Lucas’s calm face. He’s here to help, but he’s hiding something. If I choose wrong… A sudden voice echoed from the corner of the room. “You must decide quickly. Time favors no one,” said the hooded figure. Ariana took a deep breath. Her fingers hovered over the podium. I trust Lucas… I have to trust him. She pressed the pathway labeled Alliances. Immediately, the room transformed. The walls shifted, revealing a mirrored hallway. Shadows danced, representing other students some familiar, some unknown. Ariana realized she would have to navigate carefully, discerning friend from foe. And then, a soft, sinister laugh echoed behind her. She turned sharply. Vanessa. Drenched in moonlight, her eyes gleamed with malice. “So, this is where you’ve been hiding, Ariana Reed.” Ariana’s stomach dropped. Vanessa’s presence here meant the council was watching her not only for her own test but also for how she handled real enemies. Vanessa stepped closer. “I’ve been waiting for my chance. And tonight… I take it.” Ariana’s eyes narrowed. The hallway shimmered, reflecting multiple Vanessa-like illusions, forcing her to choose carefully which path to take. Lucas appeared suddenly at the far end, motioning subtly. “Focus, Ariana. Watch closely. Every choice matters.” Her pulse raced. Each shadow, each reflection, could be a trap or the real Vanessa. And then, the hooded council member’s voice came from everywhere at once: “Choose wisely… or everything you’ve survived will be for nothing.” Ariana’s hand trembled as she stepped forward. The hallway shifted violently. The floor beneath her seemed to fracture into darkness. And then Ariana fell. But instead of hitting the ground, she landed in a chamber she had never seen before, cold and silent, with walls inscribed in the same silver symbols from the invitations. Her breath caught. A figure stepped out of the shadows one of the Elite Council members fully revealed this time. “You chose Alliances,” he said, voice calm and dangerous. “Interesting choice. Very… interesting.” Ariana’s eyes widened. Before she could speak, the figure added: “But do not think you are ready. You’ve only scratched the surface. And your enemies… are already closer than you imagine.” From the corner of her eye, she glimpsed a shadow moving Vanessa was still there, and this time, she wasn’t alone. The chamber went dark. Ariana felt a cold hand graze her shoulder and she heard the whisper: “The real game begins now.”
