Chapter 1:Reconnection

274 Words
Chapter 1: Reconnection Alex stepped off the plane, Cape Town's Table Mountain looming like a sentinel over the city, its flat top shrouded in a wispy veil of cloud. The Southern Cross glittered above as he breathed in salty air thick with memories – home. He scanned the arrivals crowd, spotting Maya instantly. Wildflowers tangled in her dreadlocks, same warm smile that hadn't changed. A jolt of surprise hit – she looked more stunning than ever, her skin glowing with that effortless Cape charm. He hadn't realized how much he'd missed her quirky vibe. "Alex!" She hugged him tight, scent of frangipani clinging to her skin like a whisper. "Been too long." Her voice was music he hadn't realized he'd missed – that hint of Afrikaans lilt, the way she said his name. He hugged back, feeling the tension in his shoulders ease. "How was the flight?" she asked, leading him to her battered Jeep parked illegally near baggage claim. "Long," he admitted, tossing bags in back. "But worth it." They navigated through airport traffic, chatting about nothing and everything. "You still living in that crazy flat above the greengold?" he asked. Maya laughed. "Same place, less chaos now. You?" "Traveling light," he said vaguely. The past was behind him. They hit the N2, wind whipping hair as city scape blurred. Alex leaned back, letting the rush wash over him – back in Cape Town, with Maya. "So what's next?" she asked, glancing over. "Unpacking, I guess." He smiled at her. "You?" "Giving a talk at the botanical gardens soon. You should come." The way she said it – like she'd like him there.
