Chapter Twelve: Five Minutes to Midnight

The emergency lights flashed crimson. 05:00 04:59 04:58 The countdown echoed through every corridor. Ethan, Lena, Marcus, Elena, Adrian, and General Ward sprinted through the underground complex. Behind them, soldiers evacuated frightened technicians and searched for Victor. The entire facility trembled. Chunks of concrete crashed from the ceiling. Water rushed through cracked walls. The Black Vault was dying. The Man Wearing Victor's Face They reached the reactor chamber. The steel door had been welded shut from the inside. Marcus planted a shaped charge against the hinges. "Stand back!" The explosion ripped the door off its frame. Smoke rolled through the corridor. Inside... A lone man stood beside the reactor controls. He wore Victor Kane's face. But something wasn't right. His movements were stiff. His smile looked forced. Lena stepped closer. "Victor!" The man looked at her. His eyes filled with tears. Then he whispered, "...Help me." Everyone froze. General Ward frowned. "What?" The man's voice cracked. "I'm... not Victor." He clawed at his own face. Slowly... A thin layer of synthetic skin peeled away. Underneath... Was an older man covered in scars. Marcus recognized him instantly. "...Dr. Samuel Brooks." The scientist who had designed the Black Vault. Everyone believed he'd died twenty years ago. Dr. Brooks collapsed to his knees. "He kidnapped me..." "He made me build everything." "He said if I refused..." "...he'd kill my family." Lena knelt beside him. "Can you stop the detonation?" Brooks looked toward the reactor. His expression broke. "No." "Only Victor can." The Last Key Marcus rushed to the control panel. "There has to be another way." Brooks nodded weakly. "There is." "But it requires..." "...three biometric scans." Elena. Victor. Lena. Victor wasn't there. The room fell silent. Adrian whispered, "We're too late." Above the City A black helicopter cut through the clouds. Victor sat alone in the cabin. The city lights shimmered beneath him. He poured himself a glass of whiskey. "You always choose the city." He smiled sadly. "I would've chosen you." He looked at an old photograph of Lena as a child. Then slipped it into his pocket. The pilot turned. "Sir..." "Fuel is running low." Victor nodded. "Take us to Point Echo." The helicopter changed course. Neither man noticed... A second helicopter rising behind them. No lights. No radio calls. Only silence. Back Underground The countdown reached: 02:47 General Ward received a transmission. Her expression changed instantly. "What?" She looked at Ethan. "Victor's helicopter has been spotted." Marcus smiled. "We've got him." Ward slowly lowered her radio. "...No." "What do you mean?" "The helicopter..." "...just disappeared from radar." A Sacrifice Brooks stared at the reactor. "There is one possibility." Everyone turned. "What?" "The reactor can be shut down manually." Marcus' face darkened. "How?" Brooks pointed toward the glowing core. "Someone has to enter the containment chamber." Ethan immediately stepped forward. "I'll do it." "No." Lena grabbed his arm. "You've already almost died." Marcus shook his head. "You won't survive the radiation." Ethan smiled faintly. "I know." Lena's eyes filled with tears. "No." He gently placed a hand against her cheek. "I promised I'd protect you." "And I always keep my promises." He leaned forward. Their foreheads touched. For one brief moment... The war... The lies... The bullets... All disappeared. "I love you," Ethan whispered. Lena finally said the words she'd been afraid to admit. "I love you too." Before she could stop him... Ethan turned toward the reactor chamber. He entered. The heavy steel door slammed shut behind him. Inside the Chamber The heat was unbearable. Warning alarms screamed. The reactor glowed white-hot. Ethan reached the emergency shutdown lever. A screen lit up. Manual shutdown requires authorization. He frowned. Then another message appeared. Voice recognition accepted. Victor Kane. Only Victor's voice could unlock it. Ethan stared at the screen. Outside, Lena pounded desperately on the thick glass. "Ethan!" He couldn't hear her. The countdown reached: 00:58 Then... The speakers crackled. Victor's voice echoed through the chamber. "You made it." Ethan looked around. "Where are you?" Victor chuckled. "You've finally reached the end..." "...of my game." The monitor flickered. Victor appeared live on-screen. Still inside the helicopter. Smiling. "I knew you'd volunteer." "You always do." Ethan glared at him. "Give me the authorization." Victor leaned closer to the camera. "I will." "But first..." "...answer one question." "If Lena discovers what really happened to her mother..." "...do you think she'll ever forgive you?" Ethan's expression changed. Victor smiled. "That's right." "You never told her." Outside the chamber... Lena saw Ethan's face change. Her heart sank. Victor's voice echoed through every speaker in the facility. "Lena..." "Ethan has kept one final secret from you." Silence. Then Victor spoke the words that froze everyone in place. "The night your mother disappeared..." "...Ethan's father gave the order." The countdown reached: 00:30 Lena slowly turned toward Ethan. Her eyes filled with disbelief. Ethan closed his eyes. He couldn't deny it. The secret... Was true. Just as the countdown reached: 00:20 Every monitor in the facility suddenly went black. The lights died. The reactor alarms stopped. For three terrifying seconds... There was complete silence. Then... A single unfamiliar voice echoed through the darkness. "Override accepted." No one had touched the controls. No one knew who had spoken. The reactor door slowly unlocked on its own. And somewhere deep beneath the facility... Someone began to laugh.
