Chapter Fourteen: Ashes Never Lie

865 Words
The monitor went black. No explosion. No confirmation. Only silence. Lena's heart pounded. "Did the missile hit?" No one answered. General Ward repeatedly called air command over her radio. Static. Nothing but static. Then— The screen flickered back to life. A satellite image appeared. The helicopter was gone. Only burning wreckage floated on the dark ocean. Marcus let out a slow breath. "It's over." Dr. Brooks slowly shook his head. "No..." Victor Kane never died where people could watch. The Diary Lena opened the next page of her childhood diary. Her hands were shaking so badly that Ethan had to steady the notebook. The page contained only one sentence. Written in uneven handwriting. Today I met my brother. Lena frowned. "...Brother?" She turned another page. A childish drawing. A little girl. A little boy. Holding hands. Standing beneath a tree. Both wore identical silver lockets. Below the drawing... Two names. Lena Noah Lena looked at Brooks. "I had a brother?" Brooks looked devastated. "Yes." "What happened to him?" Brooks closed his eyes. "We thought..." "...he died." Above the Ocean The burning wreckage drifted across the waves. Rescue helicopters circled overhead. One pilot shouted. "We've got movement!" A figure emerged from the water. Not Victor. The pilot frowned. "It's the co-pilot!" The unconscious man was pulled aboard. As medics removed his oxygen mask... They froze. His face... Was Victor Kane's. One medic whispered, "How can there be two of them?" The Facility Marcus stared at the live feed. "No..." Dr. Brooks grabbed the monitor. "Zoom in." The image sharpened. The man's neck was torn open. Not by shrapnel. By something else. A thin layer of artificial skin had peeled away. Underneath... A completely different face. Marcus understood instantly. "A body double." Ethan nodded. "The helicopter wasn't carrying Victor." Victor had escaped before takeoff. The Architect Speaks Every light in the facility dimmed. The distorted voice returned. "Congratulations." "You've discovered the first illusion." Lena stepped toward the camera. "Who are you?" Silence. Then— "I've known you your entire life." Lena's pulse quickened. "You know me?" "I remember when you cried because you were afraid of thunderstorms." "I remember your seventh birthday." "I remember teaching you chess." Lena's eyes widened. "No..." She whispered. "...Noah?" The voice fell silent. Then... Softly... "...Hello, Lena." Tears filled her eyes. "My brother..." "I'm sorry." The voice cracked for the first time. "I tried to find you." "They erased everything." "They told me you died." Lena couldn't stop crying. "I thought I was alone." "You never were." The Last Memory Suddenly, the diary fell open to its final page. Hidden inside was a tiny photograph. Lena removed it carefully. It showed two children smiling. One was her. The other... A little boy. Behind them stood a man in a white lab coat. Brooks. But standing slightly behind him... Almost hidden from view... Was another man. Ethan stepped closer. His breathing stopped. "...Dad." The room turned toward him. General Ward frowned. "Your father?" Ethan nodded. The man in the photo... Was General Nathan Cross. The founder of Project Phoenix. The man Victor had blamed all along. Lena looked at Ethan. "You knew?" His eyes filled with shame. "I only found out after my father died." "I spent years trying to destroy everything he built." Lena's anger softened. "You've been fighting your own family this whole time." Ethan nodded. "I couldn't let his sins become mine." The Final Broadcast Every monitor suddenly switched to a live video. Victor Kane. Alive. Standing in an unknown location. Rain poured behind him. He smiled. "I wondered how long it would take." Lena stepped closer. "Where are you?" Victor ignored the question. Instead, he looked directly into the camera. "Noah..." "...if you're watching..." "...you've disappointed me." The distorted voice instantly replied. "I stopped being your weapon a long time ago." Victor laughed. "No." "You simply found another master." Noah's voice became cold. "I don't serve anyone." Victor nodded slowly. "We'll see." He lifted a small device. About the size of a phone. Marcus' eyes widened. "No..." Brooks whispered, "The control key." Victor smiled. "The original Phoenix control key." With this..." "...every surviving Project Phoenix subject obeys." Lena frowned. "What does that mean?" Victor looked into her eyes. "You really don't remember." He pressed the button. For one heartbeat... Nothing happened. Then— Lena screamed. A blinding pain exploded inside her head. She dropped to her knees. Fragments of memories flooded back. The laboratory. The training. The gun. A little boy crying. Victor's voice. "Again, Lena." "Don't miss." Another memory. Smoke. Fire. Someone carrying her through the flames. A soldier shouting. "Take Subject Twelve!" The memories came faster. Too fast. She clutched her head in agony. Ethan rushed toward her. "Lena!" She looked up. But the warmth in her eyes... Was gone. She slowly stood. Expressionless. Her breathing became perfectly calm. Victor smiled through the screen. "Excellent." He spoke one final command. A command she'd been conditioned to obey since childhood. "Subject Twelve..." "...eliminate Ethan Cross." Silence. Lena slowly turned. She looked at Ethan. Without emotion. Without hesitation. She picked up the pistol lying on the floor. Raised it. And aimed it directly... At the man she loved.
