Chapter Nine: The Ghost From the Fire

The vault doors groaned open. A blast of freezing air rushed through the chamber. Rows upon rows of black servers stretched into the darkness, their blue indicator lights blinking like stars. Then the alarms changed. A cold mechanical voice echoed throughout the facility. "Unauthorized access detected." "Automatic lockdown initiated." Steel blast doors began crashing shut across the underground complex. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Escape routes vanished one by one. The masked man stepped into the light. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and carried himself with the quiet confidence of someone who had survived impossible odds. He looked directly at Victor. "You should've made sure I was dead." Victor's face had gone pale. "I watched you burn." The stranger smiled. "You watched the wrong man burn." Daniel tightened his grip on his rifle. "Ethan... who is he?" Ethan didn't answer immediately. His eyes never left the man. Finally, he whispered, "...Marcus." Lena frowned. "Who's Marcus?" Ethan swallowed hard. "My older brother." Lena stared. "You... have a brother?" "I had one." Marcus chuckled. "Guess death didn't suit me." Victor's calm mask began to crack. "This isn't possible." Marcus took another step forward. "For fifteen years you've hunted ghosts." "And today..." "The ghost came home." Fifteen Years Earlier... Flames consumed a military research facility. A young Ethan screamed as soldiers dragged him away. His older brother, Marcus, pushed him toward the exit. "Run!" "But what about you?" Marcus smiled. "I'll catch up." Then the ceiling collapsed. Fire swallowed everything. Ethan never saw him again. Until now. Back in the present... Victor slowly regained his composure. "I underestimated your survival." Marcus laughed. "You underestimated my patience." He pointed one pistol at Victor. The other at Daniel. "I've waited fifteen years for this conversation." Suddenly— The countdown reached... 00:00 Everyone looked up. Silence. Nothing happened. Lena frowned. "The hospital..." Victor smiled. "I lied." Confusion spread across every face. "There was never a bomb." Ethan glared at him. "You manipulated us." Victor nodded. "I wanted you here." He spread his arms. "And now..." "We're all together." The Real Target The massive screens around the vault flickered to life. A satellite image appeared. Not of the city. Not of the hospital. But of the underground facility itself. Marcus' expression darkened. "No..." Victor nodded. "Yes." He tapped a key. The screen zoomed in beneath the vault. A gigantic warhead sat hidden under the foundation. Lena's heart nearly stopped. Victor smiled. "The Black Vault was never meant to survive." Ethan whispered, "You're going to destroy it." Victor looked almost disappointed. "No." "I'm going to destroy everything above it." The map zoomed out. The explosion radius covered nearly the entire city. Millions of lives. The Race Against Time A new countdown appeared. 29:59 Twenty-nine minutes. Marcus cursed under his breath. Victor's smile widened. "You've spent all night trying to protect one woman." "Now..." "Try saving an entire city." Daniel slowly lowered his rifle. "Ethan..." "We can still work together." Marcus laughed. "Now you're scared?" Daniel didn't answer. Victor looked at Daniel with disgust. "You disappoint me." Daniel frowned. "What?" "I expected loyalty." Victor pressed a button hidden beneath the console. Daniel's eyes widened. "...Victor?" A tiny red light blinked beneath Daniel's collar. Marcus shouted, "GET DOWN!" The explosion came instantly. BOOM! Daniel disappeared in a ball of fire. The blast threw everyone across the room. Lena slammed into a steel pillar. Ethan rolled across the floor. Marcus crashed through a glass partition. Smoke filled the chamber. When it cleared... There was nothing left of Daniel except scorched metal and burning debris. Victor hadn't hesitated. He had eliminated his own most trusted lieutenant. One Last Revelation Victor looked directly at Lena. "You've spent your life asking who you are." She slowly stood. "I don't care anymore." Victor smiled. "You will." He reached into his pocket and held up a small silver ring. Elena gasped. "No..." Victor turned the ring so Lena could see the inscription inside. For Elena, Forever. Lena looked at her mother. Tears filled Elena's eyes. "Your father gave me that ring..." Victor nodded. "And I took it..." "...the night I killed him." The world seemed to stop. Lena turned toward the chained prisoner. "No..." Victor smiled. "The man standing beside you..." "...isn't your father." Silence. Everyone froze. The prisoner's face drained of color. Victor continued. "He's the man who raised you." Lena staggered backward. "My... father..." Victor slowly placed a hand against his own chest. "...is me." The words echoed through the chamber. No one breathed. No one moved. Lena's mind shattered. Victor Kane... The man who had hunted her. The man responsible for countless murders. The man who destroyed her life... Claimed to be her father. Before anyone could react— Marcus looked at Victor... Then at Lena... His expression changed. Very slowly... He lowered both of his pistols. And whispered, "...He's telling the truth."
