For the first time in her life...
Lena wished she couldn't hear.
Victor's words echoed over and over in her mind.
"...I'm your father."
She looked at Marcus.
His face held no triumph.
Only regret.
"You knew?" she whispered.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"I found out years ago."
Lena took an unsteady step back.
"No..."
"You should have told me."
"I wanted to."
"But if Victor knew I was alive..."
"He would've killed you."
Victor laughed.
"That's only half the truth."
The Secret That Started Everything
Victor walked toward the center of the vault.
"No one is born a monster, Lena."
He pressed his hand against a biometric scanner.
A hidden wall slid open.
Inside was an old laboratory.
Dust covered the equipment.
Broken glass littered the floor.
On the far wall hung dozens of photographs.
Every single one...
Was of Lena.
As a baby.
As a child.
As a teenager.
She had been watched her entire life.
Victor picked up one faded photograph.
"You were never supposed to know about this place."
He handed it to her.
It showed Victor years younger, smiling beside Elena.
Standing between them was a little girl with bright green eyes.
Lena.
The picture had been taken before everything fell apart.
Elena's voice trembled.
"You promised you'd never involve her."
Victor looked at his sister.
"I promised many things."
"And then they murdered the only woman I ever loved."
The room fell silent.
"The government blamed me."
"They framed me."
"They took everything."
"So I decided..."
"...to take everything from them."
Ethan's Promise
Ethan pressed a hand against his wounded shoulder and stood.
Blood stained his shirt.
He could barely stay upright.
Yet he walked until he stood beside Lena.
He gently took the photograph from her trembling hands.
"Listen to me."
She didn't answer.
"You are not your father's choices."
"You are your own."
Lena looked at him, tears filling her eyes.
"What if he's right?"
"What if I'm just like him?"
Ethan shook his head.
"I've seen you risk your life for strangers."
"I've seen you refuse to delete the truth, even when it would've saved you."
"You've had every reason to become bitter."
"But you didn't."
He smiled weakly.
"That's who you are."
Lena's tears finally fell.
For the first time since this nightmare began...
She believed him.
The Clock Is Ticking
The countdown flashed:
18:17
Marcus rushed to one of the control terminals.
"The warhead is armed."
"Can you stop it?" Ethan asked.
Marcus frowned.
"...No."
"There are three biometric keys."
Victor smiled.
"Correct."
"My fingerprint."
"Elena's fingerprint."
"And..."
He looked at Lena.
"...our daughter's."
Lena stared at him.
"You planned this from the beginning."
Victor nodded.
"I've spent twenty-four years planning this."
A New Betrayal
Suddenly...
The man everyone believed was Lena's father began laughing.
Softly at first.
Then louder.
Everyone turned.
He slowly stood.
The chains around his wrists fell to the floor.
They had never been locked.
Victor smiled.
"About time."
The man dusted off his shirt.
Then looked at Lena.
"I'm sorry."
"I truly am."
Lena's heart sank.
"You..."
"You were lying too?"
He nodded.
"My name isn't David Carter."
"It's Adrian Wolfe."
"The intelligence officer who took you away when you were a child."
Elena's face turned white.
"You..."
"You promised you'd protect her."
"I did."
"And I loved her like my own daughter."
He looked at Lena with tears in his eyes.
"Every bedtime story."
"Every birthday."
"Every scraped knee."
"Every school recital."
"I wasn't pretending."
"You became my daughter."
Lena couldn't stop crying.
Her whole life had been built on lies...
Yet somehow...
The man who had lied the most had also loved her the most.
The Choice
Victor stepped toward Lena.
"No more running."
"Help me unlock the vault."
"We'll erase the past..."
"...and build a future."
Ethan stepped between them.
"No."
Victor sighed.
"You always interfere."
He drew a pistol.
Marcus raised his own.
Elena did the same.
Adrian stepped in front of Lena.
For one tense moment...
Five guns were aimed.
No one moved.
No one blinked.
Then...
Lena slowly walked forward.
Ethan stared at her.
"Lena..."
She didn't answer.
Victor smiled.
"I knew you'd understand."
She stopped just inches from him.
Close enough to see every scar on his face.
Close enough to hear him breathe.
Victor reached out...
To touch her cheek.
Instead...
Lena slapped him.
The sound cracked through the vault.
"You don't deserve to call yourself my father."
Victor's smile vanished.
"You chose this."
He pulled the trigger.
BANG!
Time seemed to freeze.
Lena waited for the pain.
It never came.
Someone had stepped in front of her.
Ethan.
The bullet struck him in the chest.
He looked down in disbelief.
Then at Lena.
A faint smile crossed his lips.
"I kept..."
"...my promise."
He collapsed into her arms.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Lena screamed his name.
Victor took one step back.
Even he hadn't expected Ethan to sacrifice himself.
The countdown continued.
15:00
Marcus lunged toward Victor.
Victor fired again.
The bullet struck a fuel line.
Sparks rained from the ceiling.
The entire vault began to burn.
Emergency sirens wailed.
A mechanical voice echoed through the facility:
"CORE REACTOR FAILURE."
"TOTAL MELTDOWN IN FIFTEEN MINUTES."
Victor disappeared into the smoke.
Lena knelt on the floor, cradling Ethan.
His breathing was fading.
He reached into his pocket with shaking fingers.
He placed a small silver ring in her hand.
"I bought it..."
"...the day I realized..."
"...I was in love with you."
His eyes slowly closed.
Lena shook him desperately.
"Ethan..."
"Don't you dare leave me..."
No response.
Outside the vault...
Heavy footsteps echoed through the smoke.
One pair.
Then another.
Then dozens more.
Marcus looked toward the corridor.
His face drained of color.
"No..."
Lena looked up.
"What is it?"
Marcus whispered only four words—
"Victor called the army."
The blast doors began to open.
Hundreds of armed soldiers marched into the facility...
Their rifles aimed...
Not at Victor.
But at Lena.
