The helicopter's machine gun roared.
RATATATATAT!
Bullets ripped across the road, shattering streetlights and sending sparks flying. Ethan yanked the steering wheel hard, and the sedan fishtailed before regaining control.
Lena screamed as the rear windshield exploded into thousands of glittering shards.
"They're going to kill us!"
"They would've done it already," Ethan replied, his voice steady.
"What do you mean?"
"They're trying to force us somewhere."
Before she could ask where, another burst of gunfire tore across the asphalt ahead, forcing Ethan to brake.
Three black SUVs shot out from side streets, boxing them in.
"They've trapped us!"
Ethan's eyes darted across the road.
Left—blocked.
Right—blocked.
Behind—the helicopter.
Ahead—the SUVs.
No escape.
The lead SUV's doors opened.
Victor Kane stepped out, calm as ever, holding a black umbrella against the rain.
"You've done well to survive this long," he called. "But every road has an end."
Ethan stepped out of the sedan, keeping his body between Victor and Lena.
Victor smiled.
"I admire your loyalty."
"It's not loyalty," Ethan said. "It's a promise."
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"Promises get people killed."
Without warning, Victor raised one hand.
Every gun aimed at Ethan.
Lena's heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear the rain.
Then—
A deafening explosion erupted beneath the bridge nearby.
The ground shook.
Everyone turned.
A fuel tanker burst into flames, sending a wall of fire between Ethan and Victor.
Smoke billowed into the night sky.
"What the—?" Victor muttered.
Ethan didn't hesitate.
"Get back in the car!"
The sedan shot forward, weaving through the chaos before Victor's men could recover.
By the time the smoke cleared...
They were gone.
Twenty minutes later, Ethan pulled into an abandoned cabin hidden deep in a pine forest.
Rain drummed against the roof.
The cabin looked forgotten by the world.
Lena stepped inside.
Dust covered the furniture, but the fireplace still worked.
Ethan lit a fire.
Warm orange light filled the room.
For the first time since they met...
Silence.
Lena wrapped herself in a blanket.
"You've saved my life three times."
"I stopped counting."
"Why?"
Ethan stared into the flames.
"Because someone once failed to save someone I loved."
His voice was quieter than she'd ever heard it.
"I won't make that mistake again."
Lena looked at him.
For the first time, she didn't see a hardened operative.
She saw a man carrying years of guilt.
Their eyes met.
Neither looked away.
Slowly...
Lena reached for his hand.
Ethan hesitated.
Then let her hold it.
Outside, thunder rolled across the forest.
Inside, something neither of them expected began to grow.
Not trust.
Not yet.
But the beginning of something neither could deny.
Miles away...
Victor Kane stood inside a dimly lit room.
A hooded figure entered.
"They escaped."
"I know," Victor replied.
"The tracker is still active."
The hooded figure nodded.
"They'll lead us straight to the archive."
Victor smiled.
"And then... to the truth."
Back at the cabin...
Unable to sleep, Lena opened her camera to make sure the photos were still there.
The assassination photos remained.
But there was one image she had never taken.
It showed her as a little girl, no older than six, standing beside a smiling man.
A man she didn't recognize.
Across the bottom of the photo, in faded handwriting, were six chilling words:
"Bring my daughter home. – V.K."
Lena's hands began to shake.
"Victor Kane..."
She whispered the initials aloud.
"...V.K."
Footsteps creaked behind her.
She spun around.
"Ethan..."
Holding up the photo.
"I've never seen this before."
Ethan took one look at it.
The color drained from his face.
"No..."
His voice was barely audible.
"That's impossible."
Before Lena could ask what he meant—
The cabin door slowly creaked open.
Neither of them had heard anyone approach.
A silhouette stood in the doorway, soaked by the rain.
The stranger smiled.
"I've finally found you..."
The cabin lights went out.
BANG!
A single gunshot echoed through the darkness.
