Chapter Eight: Beneath the Lighthouse

811 Words
The world disappeared beneath them. Lena felt herself falling through darkness, the roar of collapsing stone drowning out her scream. Then— Splash! Ice-cold water swallowed her whole. She sank. Down. Down. Her lungs burned. Panic surged through her chest. A hand grabbed her wrist. Strong. Steady. Ethan. He pulled her toward the surface. They burst through the water, gasping for air. "Lena!" "I'm here!" The cavern echoed with the sound of crashing waves. Moonlight filtered through cracks high above, revealing a vast underground sea. Elena surfaced a few meters away, coughing violently. "Ethan..." "Where's Daniel?" No one answered. Then a voice echoed through the darkness. "I'm right here." A flashlight snapped on. Daniel stood on a narrow stone ledge, untouched by the fall. He smiled. "You always were lucky." Ethan narrowed his eyes. "You planned this." Daniel shrugged. "I grew up exploring these tunnels." "You didn't." Victor's voice echoed from hidden speakers. "I did." Lights flickered on across the cavern. The darkness vanished. Lena gasped. This wasn't a cave. It was an underground military facility. Rows of abandoned computers. Steel walkways. Blast doors. A massive circular vault stood at the center. Across its surface were engraved two words: BLACK VAULT Ethan's face hardened. "So this is where you've been hiding it." Victor's laughter filled the chamber. "Welcome." "...to the place where governments bury their sins." The Countdown A giant digital clock flashed on a wall. 03:42 Lena's heart dropped. The countdown. It hadn't stopped. Victor spoke calmly. "You've arrived exactly where I wanted you." Daniel stepped onto a control platform. "You know the rules." Ethan aimed his pistol. "Move away from the console." Daniel smiled. "You won't shoot." "I will." "No." Daniel looked at Lena. "Because she still needs answers." Suddenly— A steel door slid open. Two guards dragged a bruised man into the room. His face was swollen. His wrists were chained. When his eyes met Lena's... He froze. Tears welled in his eyes. "My little girl..." Lena couldn't breathe. The man from Victor's video. Her father. He struggled against the chains. "Lena!" "I'm sorry..." "So... so sorry..." Lena took one step forward. "Dad...?" Before she could reach him— A gunshot echoed. BANG! The chain snapped. Not because someone freed him— Because Daniel had shot it. The man collapsed. Another shot. BANG! The bullet struck inches from his head. Daniel wasn't trying to kill him. He was playing with him. "You've always been weak," Daniel sneered. The prisoner looked up. "You'll never win." Daniel laughed. "I already have." Ethan's Impossible Choice The countdown reached: 02:11 Victor appeared on a giant screen. "Still think this is about money?" The screen changed. Blueprints filled the display. The Black Vault wasn't just a vault. It contained evidence capable of destroying presidents, billionaires, intelligence agencies, and organized crime networks across the world. "If I release these files..." Victor said quietly, "Every government represented here collapses." Lena stared. "You'd destroy the world." Victor smiled. "No." "I'd rebuild it." The Truth About Lena Elena stepped forward. "Why involve Lena?" Victor looked at his sister. "Because she belongs here." "No!" Victor ignored her. He pressed another button. A video began playing. A little girl stood in a white room. No older than six. She solved impossible puzzles. Disassembled pistols. Cracked computer codes. Learned foreign languages. Lena watched in horror. "That's..." "...me." Victor nodded proudly. "You weren't kidnapped." "You were raised." "You were my greatest project." Lena shook her head. "No..." "My childhood..." "...my memories..." Victor interrupted. "Were rewritten." Her knees buckled. Every memory she'd ever trusted suddenly felt like a lie. Betrayal The countdown reached: 00:59 Ethan looked at Lena. "We're leaving." "No." She stepped away from him. "I need the truth." "Lena!" She looked at Victor's screen. "You've lied to me my whole life..." "...but I want to know why." Victor smiled. "Come to me." Ethan grabbed her arm. "Don't." Daniel slowly raised his rifle. "So predictable." Without warning— BANG! A bullet struck Ethan in the shoulder. He staggered backward. "Ethan!" Lena screamed. Daniel aimed again. This time... At Ethan's head. The countdown reached: 00:30 Everything slowed. Lena looked around desperately. Her father. Bleeding. Her mother. Cornered. Ethan. On one knee. Daniel. Ready to fire. Victor. Watching everything unfold. Then... A voice echoed from behind the vault. "Step away from the girl." Everyone turned. A figure emerged from the shadows. Wearing a black tactical suit. Face hidden behind a mask. Holding two pistols. Victor's smile disappeared for the first time. "...Impossible." The masked figure removed the mask. Everyone froze. Lena stared. Ethan's eyes widened. Daniel took an involuntary step backward. Victor whispered one word. "No..." The man smiled. "I told you once..." "...ghosts always come back." The countdown reached: 00:10 And before anyone could speak— The vault doors began to open. From inside... Came the sound of hundreds of alarms.
