The black SUV roared through the rain-soaked streets, its tires screaming as it took a sharp corner. Lena clutched the dashboard, struggling to catch her breath. Her camera bag rested on her lap, soaked but still intact.
The stranger kept one hand on the steering wheel and the other close to the pistol resting beside him. His face showed no panic—only focus.
Behind them, three black SUVs tore through traffic.
"They're still coming!" Lena shouted, glancing into the side mirror.
"I know."
"You don't seem worried."
"I'm not."
He swerved between two trucks, forcing one of the pursuing vehicles to brake hard. It slammed into a divider with a deafening crash, sparks flying into the night.
Two vehicles remained.
Lena stared at him.
"Who are you?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he pressed a button on the dashboard.
A hidden compartment slid open, revealing another handgun, spare magazines, and a small first-aid kit.
"What kind of car is this?" she whispered.
"The kind built for nights like this."
Before she could ask another question, bullets shattered the rear windshield.
Glass exploded across the back seat.
Lena screamed and ducked.
The stranger remained calm.
"Seatbelt."
"What?"
"Now."
She clicked it into place just as he jerked the steering wheel.
The SUV shot down a narrow alley barely wider than the vehicle itself.
One of the pursuing SUVs followed.
The second wasn't as lucky.
It clipped a concrete pillar and rolled over, crashing into a parked truck with an explosion that lit up the alley.
Only one vehicle remained.
The stranger smiled for the first time.
"They're getting desperate."
"They're trying to kill us!"
"No," he replied, his eyes fixed on the road. "They're trying to kill you."
A chill ran through Lena.
"Why me?"
"Because you saw something they can't afford to let the world see."
Her hand instinctively gripped her camera.
The photos.
She still had them.
The stranger noticed.
"Delete them."
Her eyes widened.
"No."
"It'll keep you alive."
"It'll bury the truth."
He finally looked at her.
For a split second, there was something behind his icy expression—respect.
Then...
A truck burst from an intersection.
The stranger slammed the brakes.
The SUV spun sideways.
The pursuing vehicle couldn't stop.
It smashed into the truck with a thunderous impact.
Metal twisted.
The engine exploded.
Silence.
Only the rain remained.
Lena slowly looked back.
No one crawled from the wreckage.
"They're... dead."
"They made their choice," he said quietly.
Minutes later, they arrived at an abandoned warehouse near the docks.
The large steel doors opened automatically.
Inside, armed men in tactical gear stood guard.
Every one of them saluted the stranger.
"Commander."
Lena frowned.
Commander?
The stranger stepped out of the SUV.
"Bring the witness inside."
"I'm not a witness," Lena snapped. "I'm a journalist."
He turned to face her.
"No, Ms. Carter."
His voice was calm, but it carried the weight of a warning.
"Tonight, you became the most hunted woman in the country."
He finally extended his hand.
"My name is Ethan Cross."
"Lena."
"I know."
Her heart skipped a beat.
"How?"
Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out a government file.
Her photograph stared back at her.
Every detail of her life was inside.
"You've been under surveillance for six months."
Lena's face drained of color.
"You've been watching me?"
"No."
His expression darkened.
"They have."
Before Lena could demand answers, alarms blared throughout the warehouse.
A soldier sprinted toward Ethan.
"Commander!"
"What is it?"
"They found us."
"Who?"
The soldier swallowed hard.
"The Black Serpents."
The lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then...
A single gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Someone screamed.
And a body hit the floor.
