Chapter Three: The Safehouse Was Never Safe

The warehouse plunged into darkness. For one terrifying second, no one moved. Then came another gunshot. Bang! A scream echoed through the building. "CONTACT!" someone shouted. Automatic gunfire erupted from every direction. The once-quiet warehouse exploded into chaos. Lena dropped to the concrete floor, instinctively covering her head as bullets tore through wooden crates above her. Splinters rained down around her. "Ethan!" she cried. No answer. Only gunfire. Then, suddenly— A firm hand grabbed her wrist. She gasped, nearly screaming, until a familiar voice whispered in the darkness. "It's me." Ethan. He pulled her behind a stack of shipping containers just as a burst of bullets ripped through the spot where she'd been lying seconds earlier. "Stay low." "Who turned off the lights?" "They did." "You mean the Black Serpents?" He nodded. "They always cut the power before they attack." Lena's heartbeat pounded in her ears. "So... they're inside?" "They've been inside." Her eyes widened. "What?" Before Ethan could explain, a flashlight beam sliced through the darkness. A masked man appeared between the crates, rifle raised. Ethan reacted instantly. He stepped out, fired twice— Bang! Bang! The attacker collapsed without a sound. But another emerged. Then another. Then five more. "They're everywhere!" Lena whispered. Ethan pressed a finger to an earpiece. "Alpha Team, report." Static. No response. "Bravo?" Nothing. His jaw tightened. "They've jammed our communications." "So what do we do?" "We leave." A deafening explosion shook the warehouse. The entrance collapsed in a cloud of dust and twisted steel. Lena coughed as debris filled the air. "Our exit!" "They planned this," Ethan muttered. He scanned the warehouse, his eyes stopping on a narrow maintenance corridor. "This way." The corridor was barely wide enough for two people. Emergency lights flickered red overhead, casting long shadows across the concrete walls. Lena hurried after Ethan. Behind them came the unmistakable sound of boots. "They're following us." "I know." "How many?" He didn't answer. Instead, he pulled a small object from his pocket and placed it against the wall. A blinking red light. "What is that?" "A gift." They rounded the corner. Three seconds later— BOOM! The explosion thundered through the corridor. Dust and smoke blasted forward. The footsteps stopped. For now. Lena stared at him. "You planted explosives?" "I planned for visitors." "You always do this?" "Only when people try to kill me." Despite everything, a nervous laugh escaped her lips. Ethan glanced at her. "You're laughing?" "I'm trying not to cry." For the first time, the corner of his mouth lifted. It wasn't much. But it was the first genuine smile she'd seen. They emerged into an underground parking garage. Rows of black vehicles stood in silence. Ethan walked straight to a gray sedan. "You keep cars everywhere?" "I keep options." He unlocked the car. Before either of them could get inside— Headlights flared to life. One. Two. Three. Four SUVs rolled into the garage, blocking every exit. Doors swung open. Dozens of armed men stepped out. All dressed in black. All wearing the same silver serpent emblem. The Black Serpents. Their leader stepped forward. He wasn't masked. His suit was spotless despite the rain. Silver hair. Cold smile. He looked directly at Lena. "So..." His voice was calm. "We finally meet." Lena froze. "You know me?" "I know everything about you." Ethan stepped in front of her. "You shouldn't be here, Victor." Victor Kane smiled. "Neither should you." His eyes shifted to Lena. "You've caused me a great deal of trouble tonight." "I won't give you those photos." Victor chuckled. "My dear..." He slowly clapped his hands. "I don't want the photos anymore." Lena frowned. "Then what do you want?" "You." Silence. Ethan's hand tightened around his pistol. Victor's smile widened. "Alive." Without warning— Every light in the garage went out. Darkness. Again. Lena heard Ethan curse under his breath. "They've cut the power." "No..." Victor's voice echoed through the darkness. "I did." Then— A laser sight appeared on Ethan's chest. Then another. Then another. Ten red dots. Twenty. Thirty. Every sniper rifle in the garage was aimed at him. Victor stepped into a beam of emergency light. "You have two choices." He smiled. "Give me the girl..." "...or everyone here dies." Ethan didn't lower his weapon. Instead... He laughed. Victor's smile faded. "What's funny?" Ethan looked toward the ceiling. "You always did underestimate me." He pressed a tiny button hidden inside his watch. Nothing happened. Victor smirked. "Broken?" Ethan smiled. "No." "The countdown has already started." Victor's expression changed. "What countdown?" Three... Two... One... The entire garage exploded into blinding white light as dozens of flash charges hidden in the ceiling detonated simultaneously. Everyone except Ethan and Lena screamed, temporarily blinded. "Move!" Ethan shouted. He grabbed Lena's hand. They sprinted through the chaos. Gunfire erupted wildly in every direction. Bullets ricocheted off pillars. Car alarms blared. Glass shattered. They dove into the gray sedan. The engine roared to life. Ethan slammed the accelerator. The car burst through a security gate, showering sparks behind them. For a brief moment... They had escaped. Or so they thought. Lena looked into the rearview mirror. Her blood ran cold. A black helicopter rose above the warehouse. Its spotlight locked onto them. A voice boomed through loudspeakers. "YOU CAN RUN..." "...BUT YOU CANNOT HIDE." Then the helicopter's side door slid open. A gunner mounted a heavy machine gun. The barrel pointed directly at Ethan's car. The first burst of bullets lit up the night sky—
