I stared at the message my assistant had sent me and decided to leave it on read. I was supposed to be relaxing properly. Work could wait a few more days.
I was just about to put my phone away when I saw a new message pop up from an old friend.
Kelly: Vanessa, what is going on? The diamond heirloom bracelet that your grandmother gave you—how is Emily wearing it on her wrist?
When I got divorced, I searched the entire villa from top to bottom but could never find that bracelet. It turned out Jason had hidden it away and then given it to his little mistress.
I would never swallow this insult. I was going to get my grandma's bracelet back.
When my son and I arrived, they were in the middle of toasting guests, and there, plain as day on Emily's wrist, was that very bracelet.
I cut straight to the point.
"The bracelet you're wearing is the family heirloom my grandmother left me. Please return it."
No sooner had the words left my mouth than the crowd burst into laughter at my expense.
"Isn't this Mr. Payne's ex-wife? What are you doing causing trouble right now? You aren't here to crash the wedding, are you?"
"Mr. Payne is young and successful. It wouldn't even be that embarrassing if you were here to crash the wedding. Why make up such a ridiculous story? It's laughable."
"Wait, who's the kid with you? Is that Mr. Payne's son? Are you going to threaten him with the child? This is going to be good."
Jason furrowed his brow and snapped, "What do you mean by this? You aren't actually here to crash the wedding, are you? Stop dreaming. I stopped liking you ages ago. The person I truly love is Emily.
"As for the child, I'll acknowledge him as mine, but you won't be able to visit him often after this. I'm sorry, but I have to consider my new wife's feelings."
I was genuinely speechless. What on earth made him think this child was his?
Besides, with the resources I have now, I could easily buy ten entire Payne Group corporations. Why would I come here to pester him?
"Jason, I am not here to crash your wedding. I came today solely to get my grandmother's bracelet back. It's currently on your new wife's wrist. If you give it to me now, I will leave immediately and won't disturb your wedding any further.
"Also, my son was born to me and my current husband. He has nothing to do with you. Please stop saying things that will cause misunderstandings."
He turned a deaf ear to everything I said before that and only caught the last line.
"You have a husband now? When did this happen? No, that's impossible. You used to be completely wrapped around my finger. How could you marry someone else? This boy must be my son. Kid, tell me, how old are you?"
My son looked a little frightened, so I quickly stepped between them.
"Jason, stop obsessing over these meaningless questions. Just give me the bracelet back."
"What bracelet? The one on my wife's wrist was bought by me at an auction for 800,000 dollars. How could it possibly be yours? If you're short on money, just swallow your pride and beg me a little. We were married once. I wouldn't really leave you to struggle, would I?"
Watching him twist the truth right in front of me, I realized there was no point in reasoning with him.
I reached out directly, intending to take the bracelet off Emily's wrist.
But Jason reacted quickly and immediately shielded her behind his back.
I was completely focused on grabbing the bracelet and didn't notice that my son had dashed over to protect me.
Jason shoved hard, and my son was knocked straight into a table. Blood covered his entire face.
Looking at my injured son, I didn't have any energy left to waste fighting with them. I picked up my crying child and left immediately.
But Emily still refused to let me go and chased after me, hurling sarcastic jabs.
"You really are such a scheming b***h. You deliberately let your son get hurt to win sympathy, didn't you? You must be so pleased to see how guilty Jason feels now, aren't you?
"You're so cunning and calculating. It's really bad luck for a child to have a mother like you."
My son's injury couldn't wait, so I had no interest in wasting words on her.
But I swore to myself that I would make them repay everything I went through today—with interest.
