A real king does not hide behind his army when the enemy lights the gates on fire.
The communication console inside the armored luxury vehicle buzzed with urgent, high-frequency static. Master Vance adjusted his earpiece, his face turning incredibly grim as he looked at the digital tactical map displaying the borders of the industrial slums.
"The Crimson Lotus Council has officially sealed the perimeter, Young Master," Vance reported, his voice tight with tension. "They have deployed heavily armed mercenary units to block every single entry and exit point of Sector 4. They are actively hunting our local scouts as we speak."
Leo Walker did not look up from the dark metal ring on his finger. "How many scouts are trapped inside the containment zone, Vance?"
"Fourteen men from our forward reconnaissance team, sir," Vance replied, his fingers flying across the touch screen. "The mercenary forces are using high-tech infrared trackers and heavy armor. I will mobilize the primary strike division of the Sovereign Group immediately to breach their blockade."
"No," Leo said, his voice dropping to a low, commanding tone that instantly froze Vance's hand over the deployment keys. "Keep our main forces stationed at the financial district. If we deploy the entire Sovereign army now, the capital city elders will know exactly how much we value our internal network intelligence."
"But Young Master, those mercenaries are not ordinary thugs," Vance protested, turning around in his seat to look Leo directly in the eyes. "They are specialized corporate contractors. They are armed with top tier military gear specifically engineered to neutralize unmapped energetic anomalies."
Leo stood up from the premium leather seat, pulling a long black heavy coat over his tailored suit. "Then it is the perfect opportunity for a field evaluation, Vance. I need to know exactly what this shadow armor can handle before we take the fight to the capital."
"Going in alone is reckless, sir," Vance urged, his wrinkled forehead furrowing deeply. "Let me at least send a tactical squad to cover your flanks."
"Stay in the vehicle, Vance," Leo commanded smoothly as he opened the heavy reinforced door of the car. "Monitor their communication frequencies. If my scouts are found, give them the coordinates to the northern docks."
Before Vance could argue further, Leo stepped out into the pouring rain. The door closed firmly behind him, cutting off the warm light of the vehicle.
The air inside Sector 4 was thick with the bitter scent of industrial grease and wet ash. Heavy searchlights from armored mercenary transport trucks swept across the cracked concrete walls of the abandoned warehouses, casting long, erratic shadows across the narrow alleys. Red laser sights danced along the rooftops like a swarm of angry insects.
Leo walked down the center of the flooded street, his boots splashing quietly in the muddy puddles. He did not attempt to hide. He let his internal energy flow outward, allowing the dark kinetic current to coat his clothing like a layer of living, liquid obsidian. The shadow armor hummed against his skin, absorbing the cold impact of the falling rain.
"Target sighted at the central intersection!" a harsh voice shouted through a tactical megaphone from two blocks away. "Unidentified male matching the primary profile. He is broadcasting an active energetic signature. All units, execute the suppression protocol immediately!"
The heavy thud of combat boots echoed from the darkness ahead. Six mercenaries wearing advanced matte black body armor and high tech visor systems turned the corner, their assault rifles raised and locked onto Leo’s chest. The barrels of their weapons were lined with glowing blue power cells.
"Freeze and drop to your knees!" the lead mercenary bellowed, his rifle hummed loudly as it charged. "You are violating a corporate containment zone! Identify yourself!"
Leo kept walking forward, his pace steady, his expression completely detached. "You are standing on my property, contractors. You have exactly ten seconds to leave this sector before I balance the account."
"Open fire!" the leader ordered.
The narrow alley exploded with a volley of high frequency energy rounds. The blue projectiles tore through the air, vibrating with enough force to shatter solid concrete.
Leo did not dodge. He simply raised his left hand, activating the kinetic shield embedded within his family ring. The shadow armor around his body expanded, forming a dense, translucent black wall of energy right in front of his chest.
The energy rounds slammed into the shadow shield, creating a series of deafening metallic snaps. Instead of exploding, the blue projectiles lost their velocity instantly, dropping into the mud like harmless lead weights. The shadow armor absorbed the kinetic impact completely, transferring the energy back into Leo's core network.
"What kind of defense is that?" one of the mercenaries gasped, his visor flashing as he tried to recalibrate his tracking system. "The power levels are off the charts! Our suppression rounds are not disrupting his signature!"
"Keep shooting!" the leader screamed, frantically reloading his weapon. "Bring the heavy heavy artillery weapons forward!"
"Your ten seconds just expired," Leo said softly.
With a swift, fluid motion of his arm, Leo swept his hand outward. The shadow shield fractured into six separate razor sharp kinetic blades that flew through the rain with incredible speed.
The mercenaries did not even have time to raise their tactical shields. The black blades struck their weapons with perfect accuracy, cleanly severing the barrels of their high tech rifles and throwing the men backward into the metal shipping containers lining the street. The force of the impact left them groaning in the mud, their advanced armor completely short circuited by the shadow energy.
Leo walked past the fallen soldiers without looking down. He could feel his connection to the network growing stronger with every second the armor remained active. The physical constraints of the simulation were bending around his movements, allowing him to perceive the structural weak points of everything within his line of sight.
Suddenly, a sharp, cold instinct flared deep within Leo’s mind. It wasn't a tactical deduction; it was a physical warning radiating directly from the metal of his family ring.
A deafening crack echoed from the top of a distant crane overlooking the industrial docks.
A single high-caliber sniper round tore through the rain, moving at hypersonic speed. The projectile bypassed the outer kinetic dampeners of Leo's armor entirely, its path completely silent until the absolute final microsecond.
Leo tilted his head back instinctively, his reflexes heightened by the silver circuit pattern flashing violently inside his eyes.
The heavy bullet missed his left cheek by less than two inches, slamming directly into the reinforced brick wall of the warehouse behind him. The impact was catastrophic. The entire section of the wall shattered into a cloud of red dust and flying stone fragments, the sheer force of the vacuum tearing a long gash across the collar of Leo’s heavy black coat.
Leo stumbled back a step, his breath catching as he looked at the impact crater.
The remnants of the bullet were embedded deep in the broken masonry, glowing with an intense, unnatural shade of deep crimson. A strange, viscous red substance began to bleed outward from the metal casing, sizzling as it came into contact with the brick.
Instantly, the shadow armor around Leo’s left shoulder began to flicker and dissolve. The dark energy hissed violently, turning into grey steam as the crimson radiation from the bullet spread through the air. The heavy ring on his finger turned ice cold, its internal vibration dropping to an absolute standstill.
"The energetic matrix is collapsing," Leo muttered, his voice tightening as he gripped his left wrist. He could feel a heavy, numbing sensation creeping up his arm, completely blocking his access to the shadow network.
"Direct hit confirmed on the target's primary node!" a spotter’s voice cracked through a hidden mercenary radio frequency nearby. "The blood extraction compound is working! His shadow manipulation is completely suppressed! Move the secondary capture team in now!"
Leo stood in the dark, rain-slicked alley, his greatest weapon temporarily neutralized, as the sound of approaching armored vehicles rumbled through the iron gates of the slums
