The doctor's words from the other day rang in her ears heartlessly. "Your brother's dead..."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Emily hugged Ellen tightly. "Tristian's at school. I'll bring him to see you next time, okay?"
Ellen's mind was addled. She nodded doubtfully and fell silent.
Emily wiped her tears away and smiled, "Mum, is there anything that you want to eat? I'll get it for you."
Ellen didn't say anything. She had her arms wrapped around her knees, which was a sign of insecurity.
She stared into space as Emily talked to her.
"Mum..." Emily grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her. "Talk to me, or just look at me. I'm your daughter, Emily."
