Tristram and Ivan discreetly left the hall and walked quickly down the street in the direction of the emu. The moon was waning – no longer full, but a gibbous moon high in the clear night sky. The air was dry and warm, and Tristram could smell the water from sprinklers in the gardens that they passed.
