Immediately the door slid shut behind them, I turned to Sam and asked him, “What is all this craziness about? Why do we have to live here and why does it sound like you’ve already agreed to this?” I asked.
Sam took a deep breath then answered, “Look, we are who we are now and there is no use pretending like we could go back to being normal humans anymore. And just like you heard the man, we have to stay here until we learn the ropes- their powers and their laws- then we can go back to doing whatever we want.”
“I know that all this is so sudden, but think about it, this is an opportunity to make something for ourselves. For the first time, we have been given the power to better ourselves, I don't plan on throwing this opportunity away. So what's a few months or years, I intend on learning everything I can and improving myself in ways that no one would ever see coming. Now that I have power, I believe that I can.” Sam said with so much conviction.
I stared at him, determination radiating off him. “I love how determined you are, but don't you think we would face the same issues we faced in the human world? I know we have powers now, but so do others here. These powers don't make us special. We have to be like the bottom of the food chain around here. The same hierarchy system that pushed us down in the human world would be present here also, if not worse.”
“Oh, of course I know that. So what if they do have a worse hierarchy system here, we will just have to climb it, because here, only the strongest lead. So we will just have to grow stronger.” Sam said, fired up.
I took a moment to think about everything he had said and decided he had a point. This was an opportunity for us to rise in life. This was the only place where being better than others could mean something. We might not be better than anyone at the present, but with time, we could get there.
“Okay let's say we go along with your plan, what does this business with Marco mean, and what others did they talk about?”
Immediately after I asked the question, Sam looked deflated. All the eagerness and determination evaporated.
The room went silent for a couple of seconds.
“You might want to sit down for this.” He said, sounding serious.
I didn't move, just stared at him, “Please continue,” I said
Then he continued. “So, while we have confirmed that you are now a werewolf, due to obvious reasons,” he said pointing at my chest, “there seem to be some complications.”
“Complications like what?”
“First it started with the day I awoke, I had only been unconscious for a day. When I opened my eyes, Marco was there alongside Amin and her dad. But that wasn't the weird part, the weird part was that I had awoken to a burning sensation all over my body, like I was on fire. That was until Marco threw me a bag of blood and without thinking, I bit down on it and gulped it down. After I had calmed down, they explained that now that I am a vampire I would have to live on blood.” He said looking deflated.
“I am sorry you have to go through that my friend,” I said.
“Oh don't feel too sorry for me yet, you are not off the hook either.” He said grinning.
Now I don't like where this is headed. ‘What do you mean by that?’ I thought to myself, worried.
“So after I was well rested and quite back to normal, I was told that Marco had come to claim me as his creation and take me back to the vampire community as is the law. I pleaded and bargained with him to give me until you regained consciousness - or not - at most three days, then I would go with him. He agreed, but before leaving, he asked to see you.” Sam said, staring at my face, trying to gauge my reaction. I just shrugged and urged him to proceed, which he did.
“On seeing you, he acted like he had seen a ghost, repeating to himself that this was impossible. We were all confused by his reaction and asked him what was going on, what was it that was impossible? Then he shocked us all by saying that you are a vampire.”
“Wait what!” I shouted in surprise. “I am what now?”
“Vampire,” my friend confirmed. “We all had the same reaction as you when he said it and thought he was pulling our legs, then Lord Pax called in some vampires living close by and they said the same thing. So it was said that vampires give off a certain red aura that is visible to other vampires. My untrained eye could also see it but I didn't know what it meant until they explained it.”
“I am a vampire?” I asked in doubt. “But I haven't drunk blood like you since I regained consciousness.
“Oh, you did drink blood, just not after you awoke. That same night, in the midst of the commotion, you began thrashing around and bearing your teeth which later elongated into fangs, even though you remained unconscious. You were fed blood which you made a mess of but drank anyway, then went back to your comatose state. This more than confirmed it, you are also a vampire.” He explained.
“But how? I don't see how that could be possible.” I mused.
“Well that was the question on all our minds, how could a human turn into a vampire without being bitten? And while we pondered, the demis or witches as they are called these days arrived with a bigger shock.”
I scoffed, “What bigger shock can there be than this? What are they going to say, that I am one of theirs also? A demo or what did you call them?” I joked in frustration.
Sam stared at me in silence then nodded his head.
“Oh come on, I'm only trying to ease the tension by joking a little, you don't have to feel offended,” I said, not able to understand his reaction.
“I am not offended,” he replied. “I'm saying your joke hit the mark.”
“Wait, wait, wait, wait. You mean, I am a demo also? Where exactly are all these powers coming from?”
“That's the question that we are all asking till now. Anyway, the demi woman and her two accomplices, said they were notified by a divination of some sort of the creation of one of theirs which has never been heard before as demis are only birthed not created like the vampires and the werewolves. And she claimed that divination led them to you.”
“And you all believed her? I asked
“Of course not. Nothing she said made sense, but then nothing about you was making any sense at that point. So we all agreed to wait until you awoke. So I guess they are all here to see what is going on and which side you will choose.” He said.
“What does that mean? Why do I have to choose sides?” I asked, perplexed.
“So, although you might have all three powers, you still have to belong to one of the three communities as they would be responsible for your upkeep and training,” Sam explained.
“Okay easy, I will go with the demis. I love you bro, but my encounter with Marco has earned the vampires an enemy, and these werewolf guys seem too strict for my liking and what is it with the werewolf girl acting so condescending? I think the demis are a perfect fit for me.”
“No they are not Luca. The last community you want to belong to is the witches, those guys are ostracized and greatly controlled. According to what Amin told me, they are treated no better than exalted slaves. Whichever community you pick, please do not pick them.” Sam pleaded.
“But you just said I might have awoken three different powers which makes me a what now, tribrid? That should mean I am one of the most powerful around here. Right,” I asked grinning.
“Wrong, that makes you one of the weakest around here,” he answered, seriously.
“What? What do you mean?”
But before he could answer, Amin walked in, looking pissed. “Everyone is waiting. Come out here before these guys tear this place to the ground.”
