Chapter 1

Rose sat at her desk and sighed. Her eyes were a little red and burned from the continuous staring at the computer screen before her. But that was what she liked and what paid her rent. She has always been good at working with numbers, algorithms, and other computer stuff. In this, she came after her beloved parents. They both have been experts with computers, with the hardware as well as the software and furthermore she had inherited their love for all kinds of riddles, mystery, and numbers. Oh, how she would love to see them and speak to them about her work. Yes about her work because that's pretty much it, it's sad but true. Her social life practically consisted only of work, doctor's appointments, and some phone calls with her clients. Clients she never even met. But that's not unusual in her line of work and she liked it that way. She was her own boss. Rose depended on herself since the death of her parents. They had left her enough money and knowledge to start her own little company and for an apartment for her. Financially she was doing well but physically not so much. Her cough has gotten worse and the burning sensation in her lungs too. She stood up and walked to the window, she opened it fully and welcomed the ocean breeze and the view from her room. Seeing the waves was soothing for her and the salty air helped her to fill her lungs with the much-needed oxygen. She looked at the clock and grinned; her inner clock was punctual to the minute. It was time for her daily walk down to the beach. Something her parents had done as long as they lived. They spent hours and hours indoors, discussing problems or ways of solutions, but their daily walk was sacred to them. It was their time to hold hands to be only a loving couple. That was Roses only regret. That she never found or was found by someone she could love and share her love and walks with. To be honest she has given up the hope of finding that special someone and even if she longed for love and someone by her side. How could she open up and love someone in the knowledge that she could be dead within months. That was her reality. With a soft sigh, she closed the window to fetch her jacket and go outside.
