The second Alpha’s gaze locked onto the ridge where we were hiding, and the moment stretched so tight that it felt like the entire forest was holding its breath while it waited to see which way this would break. No one moved. The air felt thick in my lungs and my pulse pounded so hard in my ears that I was sure it had to be loud enough for every wolf in that clearing to hear.
