“Thank you,” I say quietly.
Nathan leans against the doorframe.
“I’m acting like a human being,” he says dryly. “Something my brother has apparently forgotten how to do.”
I turn toward him.
“Why are you helping me?” I ask honestly. “Is this just about getting back at Ezra?”
He shakes his head once.
“No. I know you’re his mate, and I know he’s treating you like s**t. No mate deserves that. Someone needed to give you a break.”
“There are no strings attached?” I ask carefully.
“None,” he replies immediately. “I don’t want anything from you.”
I nod slowly.
“I might have a job lined up,” I say. “I don’t want you taking care of me in every possible way. I need to keep my independence.”
