The reception ended with champagne, fake smiles, and endless congratulations.
But the moment the mansion doors closed behind them
The silence changed.
Kael Draxen’s mansion was massive. Cold marble floors. High ceilings. Dim golden lights.
Nyra stepped inside slowly.
This was her home now Or her cage.
The door clicked shut.
That sound felt louder than the wedding vows..
Kael removed his coat calmly, placing it over the back of a chair.
“You played your role well,” he said without looking at her.
“I wasn’t acting,” she replied quietly.
Now he looked at her.
Slowly.
From her eyes… to her lips… to the ring on her finger.
“You should learn to lie better,” he said, walking toward her.
Each step is measured.
Controlled.
Nyra’s heartbeat quickened but she refused to step back.
“I don’t belong to you,” she said
A dangerous silence filled the space between them.
Kael stopped just inches away.
His presence felt overwhelming.
“You signed the contract,” he reminded her softly.
“That was business.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
“And this,” he murmured, lifting his hand to gently grip her chin, tilting her face toward him, “is marriage.”
His touch wasn’t painful.
But it wasn’t gentle either.
It was firm.
Claiming.
Nyra’s breath hitched despite herself.
She hated that reaction.
Hated that her pulse betrayed her.
“You think you control everything,” she whispered.
His thumb brushed lightly along her jaw.
“I do.”
For a moment, neither of them moved.
The air grew heavier.
Tension crackled like a storm waiting to break.
Kael leaned closer close enough that she could feel his breath against her skin.
“You’re not afraid of me,” he observed quietly.
“No,” she replied, even though her heart was racing.
A faint smirk appeared.
“Good,” he said. “Because I don’t want fear.”
His fingers slowly released her chin but his hand moved to her waist instead, pulling her just slightly closer.
Not forceful.
Just enough to remind her of the distance between them.
“Tonight,” he continued, voice lower now, “nothing will happen that you don’t allow.”
Nyra blinked, surprised.
“But don’t mistake that for weakness.”
Their eyes locked.
Something shifted.
This wasn’t just power anymore.
It was a challenge.
Curiosity.
Heat.
“You’re not what I expected,” she admitted softly.
“And you,” he replied, brushing a strand of hair away from her face, “are far more dangerous than you realize.”
For a second, the world disappeared.
No contracts.
No cameras.
Just two stubborn hearts refusing to surrender.
Kael stepped back first.
“Your room is down the hall,” he said calmly. “Mine is opposite.”
Opposite.
Not together.
Nyra felt something strange at that.
Relief?
Or disappointment?
As she turned to walk away, his voice stopped her.
“Nyra”
She paused but didn’t turn.
“This marriage may have started as a deal,” he said quietly, “but don’t test how far I’m willing to go to protect what’s mine.”
Her fingers tightened slightly at her sides.
Without replying, she walked down the hall.
But that night
Neither of them slept.
Because for the first time…
Control was slipping.
And neither Kael Draxen nor Nyra Elowen knew what would happen when desire finally replaced resistance.
