CHAPTER 9 THE COUNCIL'S JUDGMENT

868 Words
The moment Aria stepped into the council chamber, she felt it. Pressure. Not like Kael’s controlled power. This was different. Heavy. Judging. Unwelcoming. The room was vast, circular, and dimly lit by torches lining the stone walls. At the center stood a long table, where five figures sat—each radiating authority and age. The council. Their eyes turned to her instantly. Sharp. Calculating. Aria’s steps slowed, but she didn’t stop. Not this time. Kael walked beside her, his presence steady, unshaken. If anything, his aura seemed to push back against the pressure in the room. “Alpha Kael,” one of the elders spoke, his voice deep and commanding. “You’ve brought… an outsider.” Aria felt the weight behind that word. Outsider. Kael didn’t bow. Didn’t lower his gaze. “I’ve brought my mate,” he corrected calmly. The room shifted. Murmurs followed immediately. Aria’s heart skipped—but she kept her expression steady. One of the elders, a woman with piercing silver eyes, leaned forward slightly. “An omega?” she asked, disbelief clear in her tone. “She is not just an omega,” Kael replied. Aria glanced at him briefly. There was no hesitation in his voice. No doubt. Another elder scoffed softly. “We can sense what she is. Weak. Untrained. Unworthy of standing here.” The words were meant to cut. And they did. But Aria didn’t lower her head. Didn’t flinch. “I didn’t come here to prove anything to you,” she said. The room fell silent. Kael’s gaze flickered toward her, something approving in his expression. The same elder’s eyes narrowed. “Yet you stand in a place where only the strong are acknowledged.” “Then maybe you should look again,” Aria replied quietly. A dangerous calm settled over the room. The elders exchanged glances. Testing her. Measuring her. “Enough,” the silver-eyed elder said. “If what Alpha Kael claims is true… then prove it.” Aria’s chest tightened. “Prove what?” “That you are worthy of being here,” the elder said. “Or you will be removed from this territory.” Silence. Heavy. Final. Aria felt the weight of those words. This wasn’t a suggestion. This was a challenge. Kael stepped forward slightly. “She owes you nothing.” “She owes this territory everything if she intends to remain in it,” another elder countered sharply. Their power surged, filling the room. Even Aria felt it pressing against her now. Testing. Demanding. For a moment— Doubt crept in. What if they’re right? But then… She remembered. The forest. The rogue. The power she couldn’t explain. And Kael’s words— You were never meant to be weak. Aria inhaled slowly. Then stepped forward. “I’ll do it,” she said. Kael’s head turned sharply toward her. “Aria—” “It’s fine,” she cut in, her voice steady. Her heart was racing. But she didn’t show it. “What do I have to do?” she asked. The elders seemed almost satisfied. Finally. The silver-eyed elder raised her hand slightly. “Release your aura,” she said. “Let us see what you truly are.” Aria froze. “My… aura?” “Yes,” the elder said. “Every wolf has one. Power cannot be hidden here.” Aria’s mind went blank. She didn’t know how. Didn’t understand how to control something she barely even felt. The silence stretched. The pressure increased. “Is there a problem?” one elder asked coldly. Aria clenched her fists. No. She wasn’t backing down. Not now. She closed her eyes. Focused. On everything she had felt before. The bond. The energy. That moment in the forest. For a second— Nothing happened. And then— Something shifted. A faint warmth spread through her chest. Then stronger. Brighter. Her eyes snapped open. A sudden surge of energy burst outward from her body, invisible yet undeniable. The torches flickered violently. The air trembled. And for the first time— The elders’ expressions changed. Shock. Real shock. The pressure in the room broke instantly, as if something greater had taken its place. Aria gasped slightly, her body trembling as the power continued to rise. She couldn’t control it. Didn’t understand it. But it was there. Strong. Ancient. Unmistakable. One of the elders stood abruptly. “That power…” Another whispered, “Impossible…” The silver-eyed elder’s gaze locked onto Aria, her voice barely above a whisper. “Royal blood…” The words echoed through the chamber. Aria’s breath caught. Kael stepped beside her instantly, his presence grounding her as the energy slowly began to settle. Silence followed. No one spoke. No one moved. Then finally— The elder straightened. Her expression completely changed. “Leave us,” she said to the others. The room obeyed immediately. Within seconds, only Aria and Kael remained with the council. The elder looked directly at Aria. This time— Not with judgment. But with something far more serious. “Who are you?” she asked. Aria swallowed. Her voice was quiet. “I… don’t know.” And for the first time— That answer truly mattered
