Chapter 3: The Weight of the World Fifteen years passed, transforming the little girls into young women, yet the chasm between their lives only widened. The university library was a sanctuary of quiet intensity. Sunlight filtered through the high windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Violet, now twenty, sat hunched over a massive pile of medical textbooks. She was dressed simply, in practical, second-hand clothes, but there was a sharp, focused energy to her posture. Her eyes scanned the pages with intense concentration, her hand moving rapidly as she highlighted passages and scribbled notes into a worn, battered notebook. A half-eaten, slightly stale sandwich sat forgotten beside her elbow. Across the table sat Amanda, equally engrossed in a thick nursing textbook. She looked up, watching Violet with a mixture of awe and concern. "You're going to ace this exam, Vi," Amanda said softly, breaking the silence. "You always do. You know this stuff better than the professors." Violet didn't look up immediately, her pen scratching furiously across the paper. Finally, she paused, rubbing her tired eyes. "I have to, Amanda," she replied, her voice tinged with a quiet, desperate urgency. "This is my only shot at the full scholarship. We can't afford another year of tuition. If I don't pass, I drop out." She reached into her bag and pulled out a faded photograph, staring at it for a brief moment before tucking it back into her textbook. It was a picture of Victory, Alexander, and Kiran, all smiling brightly, their faces lined with love and hardship. They were her anchor. At the exact same moment, the air in a luxury fashion show auditorium was electric with the pulse of upbeat music and the blinding flash of paparazzi cameras. The crowd murmured in appreciation as Mara, twenty and stunning, glided down the runway. She moved with an effortless, practiced grace, modeling a high-fashion gown that draped perfectly over her slender frame. She was the epitome of a socialite—confident, charming, and undeniably beautiful. In the front row, Katherine and Edward watched her, their faces alight with pride. They applauded enthusiastically as she reached the end of the runway. "She's a natural, Edward," Katherine said, leaning close to her husband. "The perfect face for our new campaign. She has that... presence." "Our little star," Edward agreed, raising his glass of champagne. "She'll take the Thorne empire to new heights. She has it all." Mara caught their eye at the end of the runway, paused, and offered a dazzling, practiced wink. She blew a kiss to the roaring crowd, basking in the adoration that had always been her birthright.
