Chapter 3 The Quiet Question

740 Words
Chapter 3 The Quiet Question The days after the celebration passed quickly, yet something inside Elvieah felt strangely unsettled. Life continued the way it always had. She and Vhein still met in the evenings, still walked through the familiar streets of their town, still talked about small things that once felt so easy between them. From the outside, nothing had changed. But somehow, everything felt slightly different. One afternoon, Elvieah sat alone on a wooden bench near the old chapel at the edge of town. It was a quiet place she often visited whenever she needed to think. Tall trees surrounded the small courtyard, and the gentle rustling of leaves filled the silence. She watched the people who passed by the chapel doors. Some entered quietly, bowing their heads before stepping inside. Others paused outside for a moment, as if gathering their thoughts before continuing with their day. Elvieah had always liked this place. It felt peaceful. Still, the quiet did not calm the thoughts swirling in her mind. Her fingers brushed lightly against the ring on her hand. The silver band caught the soft afternoon light. Engaged. The word still felt new. She remembered the night of the proposal clearly. The candles, the music, the way Vhein’s voice had trembled slightly when he asked the question. It had been one of the happiest moments of her life. So why did she feel this strange restlessness now? “Elvieah?” She looked up. Vhein was walking toward her across the courtyard, a familiar smile on his face. “There you are,” he said as he sat beside her. “I’ve been looking for you.” “I didn’t know you were looking.” “Well, I was.” He glanced at the chapel behind them. “You’ve been spending a lot of time here lately.” “It’s quiet,” she said simply. He studied her for a moment. “You’ve been quiet too.” She gave a small laugh. “Am I?” “A little.” For a moment neither of them spoke. The wind moved gently through the trees, carrying the distant sound of bells from somewhere in town. Vhein leaned back slightly, resting his arms on the bench. “You know,” he said casually, “my mother already started asking about the wedding again.” Elvieah turned toward him. “Already?” He nodded. “She wants to know what month.” She smiled faintly. “Parents move fast.” “Not just parents,” he added. “Everyone seems excited.” “They are.” He turned his head toward her. “Aren’t you?” The question caught her off guard. “Of course I am,” she replied quickly. Vhein didn’t look entirely convinced. “You’ve just been thinking a lot lately,” he said. Elvieah looked down at her hands. The ring gleamed quietly against her skin. “I guess everything is happening so fast,” she admitted. “We’ve had eight years,” he reminded her gently. “That’s true.” “And now we’re finally moving forward.” His voice carried a calm certainty that had always comforted her. Yet the strange feeling inside her remained. “Vhein,” she said slowly. “Yeah?” “Do you ever wonder if life might ask something different from what we planned?” He frowned slightly. “You mean like… changing our plans?” “Something like that.” He thought for a moment before answering. “I don’t know,” he said honestly. “But whatever happens, we deal with it together.” She looked at him. Together. For eight years, that word had always felt natural. But now, the quiet question inside her heart returned again, stronger than before. What if the path ahead wasn’t meant for both of them? Elvieah quickly pushed the thought away. She wasn’t ready to face it yet. Vhein stood and offered his hand. “Come on,” he said. “Let’s walk. It’s getting late.” She took his hand and stood beside him. As they walked away from the chapel courtyard, Elvieah glanced back once more at the quiet building behind them. The bells rang softly again in the distance. For a moment, she felt as though something was calling her. Something she could not yet understand. And deep down, she knew that whatever it was… Soon, she would have to listen.
