Chapter 5
The First Doubt
The days after Elvieah’s quiet afternoon near the chapel did not become easier.
If anything, the small questions inside her heart began to grow louder.
At first, she tried to ignore them. She filled her days with normal routines. She spent time with her family. She met Vhein in the evenings the way they always had. She laughed when people joked about their upcoming wedding.
From the outside, nothing had changed.
But inside, something had begun to shift.
The future that once seemed simple now felt strangely heavy.
One evening, Elvieah sat at the dining table with her mother while they folded freshly washed clothes. The soft hum of the electric fan filled the quiet room.
Her mother glanced at her with a warm smile.
“You and Vhein looked happy yesterday,” she said.
Elvieah looked up. “Yesterday?”
“At the plaza,” her mother replied. “Your aunt saw the two of you walking together.”
Elvieah smiled faintly. “We were just talking.”
“Well, you should enjoy these moments,” her mother continued. “Engagement is a beautiful stage.”
Elvieah nodded politely.
“Yes.”
Her mother folded another piece of clothing before speaking again.
“You know, when your father proposed to me, I felt so certain about everything,” she said thoughtfully. “It was as if my whole life suddenly made sense.”
Elvieah listened quietly.
“I never doubted it,” her mother added. “Not even for a moment.”
The words lingered in the air.
Elvieah lowered her gaze to the clothes in her hands.
Not even for a moment.
Her mother noticed the silence.
“Why do you look so serious?” she asked gently.
Elvieah quickly forced a smile.
“I’m just tired.”
Her mother studied her face for a moment, as if sensing something deeper, but she did not press further.
Still, Elvieah could not stop thinking about what she had said.
Not even for a moment.
Later that evening, Elvieah met Vhein near the riverbank outside town.
It was one of their favorite places. The path along the water was quiet, and the cool breeze always made the evening feel peaceful.
When she arrived, Vhein was already there, leaning against the wooden railing.
“You’re late,” he said playfully.
“Only by a few minutes.”
“That still counts.”
She laughed softly and stood beside him.
For a while, they simply watched the water flowing slowly beneath the bridge.
Then Vhein spoke again.
“My sister asked me something today.”
“Oh?”
“She asked why we haven’t chosen a wedding date yet.”
Elvieah looked at him carefully.
“What did you say?”
“That we’re still thinking about it.”
“And she accepted that?”
“Not really,” he admitted with a small laugh. “She said eight years should be more than enough time to decide.”
Elvieah smiled faintly.
“She’s not wrong.”
Vhein turned toward her.
“So… what do you think?”
“About what?”
“The date.”
Elvieah hesitated.
“I don’t know yet,” she said quietly.
He looked slightly surprised.
“You don’t?”
“I just think we should take our time.”
Vhein studied her expression.
“Elvieah,” he said gently, “is something bothering you?”
She shook her head quickly.
“No.”
“You’ve been different lately.”
“How?”
“You’re quieter.”
The words were not accusatory. Just honest.
Elvieah sighed softly.
“Maybe I’ve just been thinking about the future.”
“Well,” Vhein said calmly, “that’s normal.”
“Is it?”
“Of course.”
He leaned back against the railing again.
“Marriage is a big step,” he continued. “Anyone would think about it.”
She looked down at the river.
“What if someone isn’t sure?” she asked.
Vhein frowned slightly.
“Not sure about what?”
“About everything.”
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
A brief silence followed.
The wind rustled through the nearby trees.
Vhein spoke carefully.
“Are you saying you’re not sure about us?”
Elvieah’s heart tightened immediately.
“No,” she said quickly. “That’s not what I meant.”
“Then what did you mean?”
She searched for the right words but could not find them.
“I don’t know how to explain it,” she admitted quietly.
Vhein watched her for a moment before sighing.
“Elvieah, we’ve been together for eight years,” he said gently. “If something’s worrying you, you don’t have to face it alone.”
His voice carried the same calm reassurance she had always trusted.
Yet the strange feeling inside her remained.
“I just feel like life is asking me something,” she said softly.
“What kind of question?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s not very helpful,” he replied with a small smile.
She smiled back, though it did not quite reach her eyes.
“Maybe I’m just overthinking.”
“Maybe.”
He reached for her hand.
“Elvieah, whatever happens, we’ll figure it out together.”
Together.
The word echoed quietly in her mind.
For years, it had always felt so natural.
But now the quiet question returned again.
What if the path ahead was not meant to be shared?
That night, Elvieah once again found herself walking past the chapel.
She had not planned to go there.
Yet somehow, her steps always led her in that direction.
The courtyard was empty this time.
The sky above had turned deep blue, and the first stars were beginning to appear.
Elvieah sat on the familiar wooden bench.
The quiet surrounded her.
For a long time, she simply sat there, listening to the distant sounds of the town.
Then she whispered softly to herself.
“What is happening to me?”
She loved Vhein.
She knew that.
He was kind, patient, understanding. For eight years he had been part of her life in ways that were impossible to replace.
So why did she feel as though something else was pulling at her heart?
Elvieah pressed her hands together tightly.
“I should be happy,” she murmured.
And yet, the peace she expected to feel never fully arrived.
The bells suddenly rang above her.
The sound echoed through the quiet courtyard.
Elvieah lifted her head slowly.
Something about the moment felt strangely powerful.
Not frightening.
But important.
Almost like a quiet reminder.
She closed her eyes.
For the first time, she allowed herself to ask the question she had been avoiding.
What if the future she imagined with Vhein was not the one meant for her?
The thought filled her chest with a mixture of fear and sadness.
Because if that were true…
Someone’s heart would have to break.
And she already knew whose.
Elvieah opened her eyes again, staring at the chapel doors.
The wind moved gently through the trees above her.
For a moment, everything felt still.
As if the world itself was waiting.
Then a new thought entered her mind.
A frightening one.
What if the question in her heart did not disappear?
What if it only grew stronger?
And what if someday…
She would have to choose between the man she loved
and the path she could not ignore?
