Chapter 6
The Weight of Silence
The quiet question that had been lingering in Elvieah’s heart refused to disappear.
Days passed, then weeks, yet the feeling remained.
At times it was faint, almost easy to ignore. But in quiet moments, when she was alone with her thoughts, it returned with a strange persistence.
She began to notice it most during ordinary moments.
While sitting with her family at dinner.
While walking beside Vhein through the town plaza.
While listening to people excitedly talk about her future.
Each time someone mentioned the wedding, she felt a small tightening in her chest.
Not fear exactly.
But something close to it.
One evening, Elvieah and Vhein sat at the small café near the market where they had spent countless nights over the years.
The owner greeted them warmly as usual and brought their drinks without even asking.
“Same as always,” the woman said with a knowing smile.
Vhein laughed. “You know us too well.”
Elvieah smiled politely.
The café was quiet that night, with only a few other customers scattered across the room. A soft song played from the small radio behind the counter.
For a while, they talked about simple things.
Work.
Friends.
The latest gossip from the neighborhood.
But eventually, the conversation returned to the subject that had begun to follow them everywhere.
The wedding.
“My cousin called earlier,” Vhein said casually.
“Oh?” Elvieah stirred her drink.
“She asked if we’ve set the date yet.”
Elvieah gave a small sigh.
“Everyone seems very interested in that question.”
“Well, can you blame them?” Vhein replied with a small smile. “Eight years is a long wait.”
“That’s true.”
He leaned forward slightly.
“So… have you thought about it?”
Elvieah looked up.
“The date?”
“Yes.”
She hesitated before answering.
“Sometimes.”
“And?”
“I’m not sure yet.”
Vhein studied her face carefully.
“You keep saying that.”
“I know.”
“Is there a reason?”
Elvieah did not answer immediately.
Instead, she stared down at the table, tracing the rim of her glass with her finger.
“I think I just need time,” she said quietly.
“Time for what?”
“To understand what I’m feeling.”
Vhein leaned back slightly in his chair.
“Elvieah,” he said gently, “you’ve been saying things like that a lot lately.”
She looked at him.
“Does that worry you?”
“A little.”
The honesty in his voice made her chest ache.
“Why?” she asked softly.
“Because I don’t know what it means.”
Elvieah wished she could explain it clearly.
But the truth was she did not fully understand it herself.
“I’m just trying to make sure I’m making the right decision,” she said.
“About marrying me?”
The question hung heavily in the air.
Elvieah quickly shook her head.
“No, that’s not what I meant.”
“Then what did you mean?”
She opened her mouth to answer but found no words.
Instead, she looked away.
Vhein sighed quietly.
“Elvieah,” he said after a moment, “if something is bothering you, I wish you would just tell me.”
“I’m trying.”
“But you’re still holding something back.”
She knew he was right.
Yet she did not know how to explain the strange feeling growing inside her.
How could she tell him about something she barely understood herself?
The silence between them grew heavier.
Finally, Vhein spoke again.
“You know I love you,” he said quietly.
“I know.”
“And I’ve always believed that we would end up together.”
Her heart tightened.
“So have I,” she admitted.
“Then why does it feel like something has changed?”
Elvieah felt tears threatening to rise, but she forced them back.
“I don’t know,” she whispered.
Later that night, Elvieah walked alone again.
Her steps carried her along the quiet road leading toward the chapel.
The air was cool, and the sky above was filled with stars.
When she reached the courtyard, she found it completely empty.
She sat on the familiar wooden bench and let the silence settle around her.
For a long time, she simply stared at the chapel doors.
“What is happening to me?” she murmured softly.
The words echoed faintly in the still air.
She had always believed that love was enough to guide a person through life.
And she did love Vhein.
That had never been a question.
Yet the quiet stirring in her heart was growing stronger each day.
It felt like a gentle pull in a direction she had never expected.
A path she had never planned to take.
Elvieah closed her eyes.
“If this is just confusion,” she whispered, “please let it go away.”
But deep inside, she already knew something.
The feeling was not fading.
If anything, it was becoming clearer.
The bells rang softly above her.
The sound drifted through the quiet night.
Elvieah opened her eyes again.
For the first time, she allowed herself to face a thought that had been slowly forming in her mind.
What if the life she had imagined with Vhein was not the life she was meant to live?
The thought frightened her.
Because if it was true…
Someone’s heart would break.
And the person she would hurt the most was the one she loved.
She pressed her hands together tightly.
“Why now?” she whispered.
Why after eight years?
Why after the engagement?
Why when everything seemed ready to fall into place?
The night offered no answers.
Only silence.
Elvieah remained there for a long time before finally standing up.
As she turned to leave, she paused one last time and looked back at the chapel doors.
Something about the place had begun to feel different.
As if it held a question she could no longer ignore.
And somewhere deep inside her heart, Elvieah felt a growing certainty.
Soon, the quiet struggle within her would reach a moment where she could no longer remain silent.
Soon, she would have to tell Vhein the truth about the questions she had been hiding.
And when that moment came…
Their lives might never be the same again.
