The young man knew that his question may come off somewhat strange, but recalling everything that happened in the past, his heart felt like a hundred knives were mercilessly piercing at it.
Wide eyed in disbelief, with trembling lips as she opened her mouth to ask, Lyra tried hard to find her voice.
"Died? How did I die? But.. How... Am I still alive?.." Her voice is shaking while her heart begins pumping fast as her thoughts run wild, yet feeling complicated.
She died! These words were deeply ingrained in Lyra's mind. She covered her eyes with the palm of her left hand and tried to calm down.
She could feel her body sweating as she panted heavily. The clothes on her back were so soaked that you could almost wring water out of them.
Panicked. Fear. Disbelief. Confusion. Happiness. Excitement. Loss.
Panicked and fearful as she thought that she really might have died. But how could she take her revenge if she's dead?
Disbelief of being told that she died. Confused that here she was, laying in a soft comfortable bed and still breathing and completely alive.
Happiness because the young man mentioned that they finally escaped from that place. She's no longer in the lab. There's no need to experience those painful experiments.
Excitement for the chance that she could return to her family. She is no longer missing, it may have been countless years since she left, but her family should not forget her, should they?
Loss because she didn't know what to do? Can she even go back from her previous peaceful life? Was it even possible to return despite knowing she was no longer who she is.
Lyra knew she wasn't a normal human anymore. She won't forget that the lab was trying to make her a werewolf.
"I know it's unbelievable. I can tell you some things you want to know, but it would be better for you to remember it yourself since I know you wouldn't believe everything I say anyway." The young man answered with hesitation, but sadness in his voice cannot be ignored.
Not knowing what to say, Lyra's mind doesn't give her an answer to all of this. There are countless questions that keep popping in her mind.
There were only vague memories in her mind, but it only hurts her head when she tries to recall the past.
"By the way, let me introduce myself. My birth name is Mathew Anderson. That was the name given to me by my biological parents. My lab name… They call me Three or Third." he carefully said while scrutinizing her face.
Then he added, "But from now on, you will call me Alex, Alexander Drake. Your new name will be Allen Drake, my little sister."
Lyra was still trying to digest what Alex told her.
She was even wondering how to return to her previous peaceful life, yet now he was saying they have a new identity.
This completely shattered all her expectations of returning to her family.
She looked at Alex's eyes, while her chest seemed to explode. What's the use of escaping if she can't even return to her family?
Lyra can't help asking. "A new name? You mean changing identities? Are you telling me to forget..." She stopped speaking. She felt like her heart was being squeezed, making it hard to breathe.
"The lab thinks that we are already dead. They would also destroy the corpses of each failed or dead experiment. But our situation is a bit different. We can only live with a new identity. Unless you want them to find out that we are alive. But it will endanger your daughter's life." Alex immediately explained with patience.
"Hold on... What are you talking about? What daughter? That's impossible!" Lyra immediately retorted. "I was only 13 when I was taken to the lab!"
"Even though I'm not sure how long it has been, those people didn't have that kind of intention on me. All they did was to experiment.." Lyra's voice was shaking, but every word she said felt like her heart was mercilessly being ripped apart. "The last thing I remember, I was 16… no.. 18.... I... " She cupped her head with both of her hands, trying to recall until what age she was that she could remember.
Lyra is not totally unaware of how a woman could have children. These things were also taught in school.
Therefore, she didn't continue her words after remembering that some of her memories had been forgotten.
With a shaky voice, she tried to say, "Are you telling me.. Someone touched me?"
Alex did not answer right away, he stared at Lyra who's eyes started to redden, tears of blood began forming in the corner of her eyes. He knew how it would feel to wake up not remembering everything.
If he was in her situation, despite all the suffering she experienced in the lab, it is normal for her to find it hard to accept the fact that she has a daughter. Especially not knowing how it happened and who was the child's father.
Hesitating, Alex shook his head, not knowing what to say. Knowing she has lost some of her memories, he is not sure which of those years she could remember.
Finally, after taking a deep breath as he stared at Lyra. "I don't know where to start.."
"I vaguely knew the reason why you had a child at that time, but I'm afraid you might not believe it. Like I said, it's better for you to remember or discover it by yourself rather than me telling you without any proof." Alex added before he paused.
After still not getting any response from Lyra, Alex remained silent for a few minutes.
He was waiting for her to ask any questions. But it took a long time and she wasn't even moving. Maybe she needs some space alone.
"Think about it carefully. If you think you're ready to accept what I can tell you, let me know. As for now, I'll prepare something for you to eat. You go wash." Alex continued with a soft voice while he raised his hand to gently stroke her head when Lyra did not respond.
"My house is not that big, and it's easy for you to find your way to meet me in the dining room…" Still not getting any response, Alex smiled bitterly.
His eyes show helplessness and distress as he watches Lyra seemingly in daze. It must have been hard for her to accept and believe what he said. He would feel the same if he were her.
Besides, for Lyra, they just met. She wouldn't believe someone she didn't know. He was just a stranger in her eyes.
Of course he knew that she was probably suspicious of him and might be thinking that he was working with the lab. This is one of the reasons why he told her his lab name, being honest and giving her the right to judge.
Therefore, right after his words, Alex sighed before standing up to leave the bedroom. As he walked towards the door and pulled it open, he paused before turning his head to look back at Lyra.
Lyra was still in the same spot. Not moving an inch, still in a daze, not knowing what she was thinking. Alex thinks that she is probably digesting everything he said.
She must be thinking carefully like she used to. Contemplating, deciding what to do. There must be a lot of questions she would like to ask but doesn't know where to start.
He was hesitating, worried to leave her alone. Should he stay with her? Or just wait outside the bedroom?
Alex can't decide, fearing that Lyra might not be able to accept the situation. 'She won't commit suicide, would she?' He asked himself in his thoughts.
