Chapter 2. The Facade

243 Words
Akira moved into Liam's place, trying to adjust to the unfamiliar space. Liam was neat, organized, and quiet. She was... not. Clothes were on the floor, and paint splatters were everywhere. They were like oil and water. Liam showed her around, his voice calm. Akira nodded, taking it all in. As they finished, Liam said, "I'll be working late. Make yourself at home." Akira smiled, relieved. She'd explore. Akira wandered the apartment, curious about Liam's life. His bookshelf was tidy, but one book caught her eye. A photo of a woman smiling at a beach. Who was she? Akira heard Liam's phone buzz. She glanced at it—his mom's name popped up. Akira's heart skipped. Did Liam have a girlfriend? She questioned herself. Liam arrived home, catching Akira staring at his phone. "Find everything okay?" he asked, his tone neutral. Akira nodded, feeling guilty. "Yeah, it's... nice." As they ate dinner, Akira tried to make conversation. Liam answered politely, but his eyes were distant. Akira wondered what he was thinking. After dinner, Akira excused herself, needing space. She settled into her room, feeling like a guest. This wasn't going to work if they didn't talk. Akira heard Liam's footsteps outside her door. He paused, then left. Akira's chest tightened in fear. What was he thinking or doing passing by her door? Akira lay awake, listening to the silence. This was a business arrangement, not a real marriage. She needed to remember that.
