Chapter 15: The Midnight Echo
Elena had genuinely believed that pouring her heart out during that alcohol-blurred midnight call would act as a release. She had hoped that exposing her hidden feelings to the light would strip them of their power, allowing the intense crush to finally fade into something manageable.
She was completely wrong.
Instead of fading, the confession seemed to break a dam inside her. Her feelings for Julian grew stronger, deeper, and more consuming with each passing day. Now that the truth was out in the open, every thought of him felt magnified.
To make matters worse, a sudden shift in the seminary routine threw their usual connection into chaos. Because of a newly tightened schedule, Julian was no longer able to call her throughout the day or check in during his brief pockets of free time. The constant, comforting stream of communication they had relied on was abruptly cut down.
Now, the phone would only ring at midnight.
Waiting through the long, quiet hours of the day for that 12:00 AM marker became a form of slow torture for Elena. The distance between them felt wider than ever, and the empty hours bred an agonizing loneliness. She missed him terribly, her mind spinning endless scenarios in the silence of her dorm room.
One night, when the clock finally struck midnight and his familiar ringtone broke the silence, Elena couldn't hide her insecurity anymore.
"Julian," she said, her voice small and laced with a heavy, anxious ache. "Are you getting tired of me? Do you want to leave me?"
On the other end of the line, a low, familiar sound traveled through the earpiece. Julian laughed softly—a tender, reassuring sound that immediately took some of the sting out of her worries.
"I can never leave you, Elena," he murmured gently into the dark. "The schedule here is just much tighter than it was before. I barely even have time for myself, El."
Hearing his tired but gentle explanation, the fog of Elena’s anxiety finally began to lift. It was like a sudden reality check; she remembered where Julian actually was. He was in the seminary, a place entirely governed by rigid discipline, endless lectures, mandatory community prayers, and constant spiritual activities. He wasn't ignoring her because his feelings had changed; he was simply being consumed by the demands of his vocation.
Feeling a wave of understanding wash over her, Elena calmed down, her shoulders dropping as she let out a soft breath.
Sensing the shift in her mood, Julian didn't let the heavy atmosphere linger. He began to tease her, his voice throwing lighthearted jabs about how easily she panicked and how she was letting her imagination run wild in the dark. Elena couldn't help but smile, and soon, the tight knot of tension completely dissolved as they both laughed softly together over the line, the familiar warmth returning to their conversation.
But as the laughter died down into a comfortable silence, Julian’s tone shifted, becoming lower and much more serious.
"I wish you were here with me, El," he murmured into the receiver, the raw honesty in his voice cutting through the midnight quiet. "I miss you a lot."
Elena caught her breath, a sudden wave of doubt hitting her. It sounded too much like the things a regular boyfriend would say, things a seminarian shouldn't be letting himself feel, let alone speak out loud. "Are you sure about what you're saying, Julian?" she asked quietly, her heart pounding against her ribs.
"I am serious, Elena," he responded instantly, his voice steady and devoid of any teasing. He went on to tell her just how deep the emptiness felt during the day without her, confirming every word with a sincerity that left no room for doubt.
Hearing him lay his guard down so completely shattered the last of Elena's restraints. A bittersweet smile touched her lips in the dark. "I miss you more," she confessed softly, letting the truth hang beautifully between them in the quiet hour of the night.
