Chapter 5

Chapter 5 In an exquisite mansion on the quieter side of town — not too far from the city, yet distant from its bustling air — a young male voice rang out: “Eva, come down quickly or we’re going to be late for the pickup!” Alexander, the youngest son of the Voss family, called out loudly. “I’m almost done!” his sister replied. Alex slouched on the couch, headphones in place, gaming on his phone. An older woman, probably in her mid-forties, walked in from the garden and shook her head softly at the sight. “Just look at him,” Evelyn Voss, their mother, murmured. “Yells like that while not even being ready himself.” Replacing her soft gaze with a stern one, she walked up and pulled the headphones off his head. “And what do you think you’re doing, mister?” “Mom, wait—ah! Give it back, I need to finish this,” he whined, trying to snatch it back. Evelyn didn’t budge. She just stared him down, headphones in hand. Alex stopped reaching and looked up. One glance at her face was enough. His phone vibrated in his hand, and his eyes widened in horror. “No, no, no—ugh! I just got killed. Moooom!” he groaned. Evelyn rose on her tiptoes and pinched his ear, dragging him upright and toward the door. “You’re still whining about a video game? You’re supposed to go pick your brother up from the airport!” “But Mom, Eva’s not even down yet. You know she takes an eterni—” “I’m here!” Eva’s sing-song voice rang out as she descended the stairs. “You were saying?” Evelyn asked, raising an eyebrow as she tugged a little more on Alex’s ear. “Fine, Mom. We’re going.” He sighed. “Can I just have my headphones back now?” “Here you go.” She handed them over. “Go pick up your brother and bring him home. It’s been so long. I’ll make something sweet.” “Okay! I’m just glad Big Bro is back — at least you’ll stop breathing down my neck,” Alex called out as he rushed for the door, Eva close behind. They got into the BMW, trailed by a few Audis. Inside the car, chaos erupted. “Eva, you seriously take too much time to get ready,” Alex said out of the blue. “No I don’t!” Eva whined. “Big brother is coming back—of course I have to look good.” “And guess what?” Alex said, eyeing her mischievously. “What?” Eva asked excitedly, her big doe eyes sparkling with innocence. “After all that time spent, you still look like a duck.” Eva’s eyes immediately lost their sparkle as her face fell. “No I don’t… I look pretty,” she muttered, only to be met with Alex’s laughter like he was watching the funniest comedy show. She pouted as tears welled up in her eyes. “I’ll tell big brother on you! You’ll see,” she huffed and looked away dramatically. They soon arrived at the airport. Alex got out and opened the door for Eva, holding her steady as if she might trip over nothing. Inside the arrivals area, they stood off to the side waiting. “Eva, let’s take a seat. Big bro won’t be here for another ten minutes,” Alex deduced. He looked around—the seats were nearly full, save for one empty spot. “Eva, over there. Go sit down,” he said gently. “But it’s just one space. Where will you sit?” Eva asked as they walked toward it. “Shut up and sit or you’ll grow uglier by the time big bro arrives,” Alex teased, ruffling her hair. “I’m not ugly!” Eva shouted, stomping over and sinking into the chair, her lips in a dramatic pout. Alex shook his head and leaned casually against the wall, phone in hand. He looked effortlessly like a model doing a photoshoot for a youth magazine. A few minutes passed. Then, a tall figure appeared in the distance—clad in high-ranking military attire. His sharp jawline and slightly tousled hair gave him a rugged edge. Blue-tinted, gold-rimmed glasses rested perfectly on his flawless face. He walked forward—one hand tucked in his pocket, the other hanging loose by his side. Each stride was purposeful, like he didn’t belong to this world. “Big brother… is back!” Eva’s voice pierced through the air. Alex looked up just in time to see Eva take off running. "Eva, make sure you don't trip!" he yelled, jogging after her. She crashed right into the tall figure ahead, who caught her effortlessly — lifting her up in a hug mid-stride. Eva grinned from ear to ear, clinging to him like a koala. Behind him, a convoy of six men in dark uniforms followed like shadows. Alex caught up. "Big bro!" he said excitedly, leaning in for a hug. But the man — Kyle — simply sidestepped. Alex missed and stumbled forward slightly as Kyle set Eva down gently. "Big bro..." Alex whined, looking like a kid whose favorite toy was just taken away. Kyle glanced at him, posture impeccable. "Don’t whine like a child, Xander. Let’s keep moving." "But Eva—" Alex muttered, glaring at his sister who was now sticking her tongue out at him. "Eva’s a girl," Kyle said smoothly, not even breaking stride. He reached down to ruffle her hair. "Big brother! How many times do I have to tell you not to mess up my hair?" Eva squeaked, puffing her cheeks in frustration. Kyle raised a brow. "As many times as it takes for me to care. Oh wait… I never listen." Alex sulked harder. "Why are you so biased to girls? I like my hair ruffled too." Kyle threw him a flat look — half warning, half don’t be dramatic. "Let’s go." They walked toward the exit, Eva practically skipping beside him. Alex trudged along, dragging his mood like a heavy bag. The trio turned heads effortlessly. Kyle — with a face sculpted like war and poetry — radiated commanding beauty. Alex, the teen dream with flawless skin and headphones slung around his neck, looked like every schoolgirl’s crush. And Eva, nestled between them like royalty, was a picture of youthful elegance with an ethereal glow. Even without their entourage, they would have frozen the airport. But with it? They owned the space. They got into the BMW, followed by a row of cars—one from home and two from the military. Inside the BMW, chaos reigned. Alex and Eva were at each other’s throats, as usual. Kyle, unfazed, stared silently out the window, the city flickering past like memories. His eyes were cold, unreadable, holding something—something dangerously promised.
