"When you told me you were taking me out for my birthday I thought it would be a nice picnic, or a shopping spree. Not a freaking hike." McKenzie complained pausing to take a sip of her water.
"It's not my fault you're lazy Kenzie." Harry laughed.
"I just don't see the point of walking up a hill."
"Just because you don't see the point doesn't mean there isn't one."
Rolling her eyes she continued to walk glaring at Harry's back. He had to drag her out of the house once he told her what they were doing. And neither her father nor Jason where any help.
"Wasn't this place made unusable by the public after they found that body?" She asked him glancing around.
"That was six months ago. They reopened the trail last week after the investigation was closed."
"What happened to him anyway?"
"News said it was something gang related. But it doesn't matter because I'll protect you from whatever comes at us." Harry smiled flexing his none existent muscles.
"I feel so safe." Kenzie said rolling her eyes.
Nothing happened on their hike luckily. Once they were done McKenzie and Harry headed back to Winchester mansion to shower and change.
"The guys are over at your place so it's just going to be the two of us." Harry said opening the door.
"Thank God for that." McKenzie smiled closing it behind them.
"Macky?"
The pair looked up and watched Zack descend the stairs in nothing but sweatpants. Forcing herself not to blush McKenzie looked away clearing her throat.
"Put a shirt on Zack." Harry sighed.
"Well forgive me for wanting to be comfortable in my own house." He smirked.
"I'll be in your room Harry." McKenzie said making her way upstairs. Before she could go any further a figure appeared at the top of the stair case in only the other half of Zack's attire.
"Zack where did put my.... Oh hi Kenzie." The intruder smiled.
"Hi Camilla." McKenzie said forcing a smile.
Camilla the girl she hated. Camilla who made her middle school days a living hell. Camilla Zack's ex girlfriend was standing in front of McKenzie wearing only Zack's shirt and a devious smirk.
"Excuse me." Kenzie said disappearing into Harry's room.
"What are you doing down here Cami? And I told you to get dressed ages ago get out of my shirt." Zack hissed.
"What? You're mad little Kenzie got the wrong idea." She said with a fake pout before rolling her eyes. "Hurry up and give me what I came for."
"What the f**k Zack?" Harry glared once the she devil was out of ear shot.
"It's not what you think." He grumbled.
"Well Kenzie doesn't think that. For someone who claims to like her you don't seem to show it."
"She came over to get the money I'm supposed to give her brother. She fell into the pool and was waiting for her clothes to dry nothing happened."
"Look," Harry sighed "I'm taking Kenzie out shopping then dinner before your party starts. Try not to screw that up at least."
"Why are you taking her for dinner?" Zack scowled.
"Because I want to." He smiled walking away.
Zack glared at his brother before proceeding to his room. Camilla was now fully clothed scrolling through her phone on his bed.
"What the f**k was that?" He asked pulling her off the bed.
"I was just having some fun with your little girlfriend." She smirked. "Although according to what I here Harry's the most likely Winchester to have her."
"This isn't funny Cami."
"You've liked this girl since you were a kid Zack. Eight years of you just watching her from a distance. Eight years of sitting on your ass not doing anything. Why haven't you gone after her Zack? Because as far as I know you always go after what you want."
"That's none of your business." He said handing her the money. "Now get out."
"The longer it takes for you to fess up the further away she'll get from you. I'm just trying to be a friend." Cami shrugged.
"We aren't friends Cami."
"I know." She smiled walking out.
.............
Jason stood opposite Joaquin leaning against his car with an easy smirk gracing his features.
"You can't be serious Jase." Joaquin laughed shaking his head.
"I'm dead serious."
"He's your best friend. Why would you want to sabotage your best friend?"
"It's not sabotage. I love Zack. He's my brother but McKenzie comes first. Meaning her safety comes first. I don't care how in love with her he is I know he's not ready to be a serious relationship with her where I can trust him with her life." Jason said.
"But you trust him with yours."
"Of course I do. But McKenzie's life is more important. She has a brighter future. A bigger purpose."
"I understand. I'd do the same for Camilla." Joaquin nodded.
"Great we're on the same page." Jason smiled.
"I'll do it. I know what'll get him out of it and I'm positive Cami will agree. But that second request will be a bit tricky."
"We'll figure it out. It's not enough for her to hate him. I want her over him. Completely uninterested." Jason said.
"I think I have the perfect guy for her then. He's also under the protection of the family. Not involved in anything, smart kid. I'll have him transferred to your school next week."
"Thanks man."
"I promised I'd have your back and look after her. I'm doing just that." Joaquin smiled.
The two got into Jason's car and headed to his place where everyone was getting the house ready for Kenzie's party. Cami had already irritated Zack. So getting him to drink wouldn't be that much of an issue. One supposed drunken text inviting the whole school and a perfectly timed and placed Camilla and Jason won't have to worry about his bone headed best friend putting his sister in trouble.
Zack seemed to forget the type of life they led meant McKenzie would be made a target. Jason wasn't going to remind him. No, he was going to ruin any chances of her being one. Like a good big brother would do.
