County Hospital
“But doctor, can’t you at least arrange a VIP room for our young master? Three people in one ward—this is way too crowded!”
Mr. Williams, the Carter family’s butler, glanced at the other two patients in the room—an elderly man and a middle-aged man—each with a family member by their bedside.
“This is a county hospital. If you don’t like the conditions here, the best option is to transfer to a bigger and better hospital.”
The doctor adjusted his glasses and shot Mr. Williams a bland look.
“What’s with that attitude? Do you even know who I am?!” Before the butler could speak, Ethan Carter—the third Carter son—was already barking in outrage.
He was the Carter family’s Third Young Master! Everywhere he went, people treated him with respect. And now… a mere county doctor dared to speak to him like this?
“Yeah, yeah, I know—big celebrity.” The doctor wasn’t living in a cave. Even in a small town, the internet existed.
Ethan Carter was a top-tier actor, and the moment he was brought in, plenty of people recognized him.
Ethan almost blurted out that aside from being a famous actor, he was also the third son of the Carter family in Capital City—one of the city’s most powerful elites.
A real big shot. But, fine. Why waste words on a small-town doctor who probably had no clue what that meant?
He drew in a deep breath, face dark.
“Since you know I’m a celebrity, you should arrange a private ward for me! Does it look right for someone like me to be stuck in here with random people?”
“I already told you, this is a small hospital. Where exactly do you expect me to pull a private ward from?” The doctor rolled his eyes internally.
What was so great about being famous? He didn’t follow celebrities, and he certainly wasn’t a fan. That “star attitude” didn’t work here.
Too lazy to argue, the doctor turned and walked out.
Seeing him leave, Mr. Williams hurried after him. The doctor thought he was coming to curse him out—but instead, the butler apologized sincerely.
Since the man was polite about it, the doctor let it go. After all, they were both just working men… though Mr. Williams probably had a much harder job, serving such a demanding young star.
When the butler returned, Ethan snapped, “Where did you go?”
“I chased him down to give him a piece of my mind,” Mr. Williams lied with a straight face.
“Forget it. No need to waste time on small people like that. Just get me discharged immediately. I’m leaving.”
There was no way he’d stay in this outdated place. He needed to get back to Capital City and have the best medical team run a full check-up.
“But the doctor said you should stay for two days of observation…” The butler hesitated. If something happened on the way, he’d be the one held responsible.
“I’m not spending another day in this dump. Go handle it now. I’m leaving!”
He swung his legs off the bed and gestured for the butler to help him put on his shoes. Mr. Williams reluctantly crouched down and did as told.
The other patients and their family members whispered quietly to each other:
“That guy’s definitely a celebrity. I knew he looked familiar!”
“Looks even better in person than on TV.”
“Bit of a temper, though. Did you hear the butler call him ‘Young Master’? Must be loaded.”
“No wonder he’s looking down on our little hospital—probably used to luxury.”
Just then, Emma Carter walked in, holding two bottles of Coke. She had bought one for Ethan, despite the fact that earlier words from him had hurt her feelings. She’d decided to be the bigger person.
“Ethan, you’re not staying?” she asked.
“You’ve got some nerve showing up!” Ethan’s temper flared instantly. If she hadn’t suddenly started crying in the car, the driver wouldn’t have been distracted, and they wouldn’t have crashed into a tree!
“Careful with your neck,” Emma said softly, noticing the brace he was wearing.
“You dare bring that up? This is all your fault!” he barked, jabbing a finger at her.
Emma’s big eyes blinked, her voice small and pitiful. “It’s not like I was the one driving. How is it my fault?”
“It is your fault! Everything is!” Ethan just needed someone to blame—and she was the perfect target.
“You’re wronging me again, Ethan. You’re bullying me! Waaaah—”
The moment her cries rang out, Ethan’s legs buckled, and he collapsed to the floor with a thud.
The fall jolted his already injured neck.
“AAAHHH!” His agonized scream echoed through the entire floor.
The man who’d been about to leave the hospital was now rushed into emergency care.
Emma stood by looking small and innocent, her expression the very picture of “fragile and wronged.”
Nobody suspected her. Everyone chalked it up to bad luck.
Nobody… except Mr. Williams. He couldn’t help noticing—both times Ethan had been injured, Emma had been crying.
Could it really be connected?
…No, that was ridiculous. Right?

Meanwhile, at the Carter Mansion
“I thought Ethan was bringing Emma home today! Where are they? It’s past noon already!”
It had been less than an hour of waiting, but the Carter brothers were already restless.
For this reunion, family patriarch Richard Carter had gathered everyone together.
Richard and his wife, Margaret, had five sons and one daughter.
The eldest, Daniel Carter, 28, stood at 6’2″ with sharp features straight out of a CEO romance novel. He was the current CEO of Carter Enterprises.
The second son, Marcus Carter, 26, was 6’2″, ruggedly handsome, and built like an action hero. He ran several extreme sports clubs.
The third son was Ethan Carter, 23, 6’1″, and the nation’s top heartthrob actor. He had a perfectly balanced physique—slim in clothes, muscular without—and a face like it had been drawn by a manga artist.
The youngest two, Nathan and Noah Carter, were 20-year-old twins, both 6’0″ with refined, scholarly looks. They were campus princes at A University, dreamboats for countless female students.
As for the youngest daughter—Emma Carter—she had only recently been brought back to the family. The girl who had grown up in her place was Olivia Carter, the so-called “fake daughter.”
Today, everyone had gathered to welcome Emma home… except Ethan, who was supposed to pick her up. Olivia was also present, of course.
