THE PRICE OF POWER

822 Words
Kingston I leaned back on my seat, the visible horizon of Sydney stretched beyond the beauty of my mansion, something that seemed so appealing to my eyes, was no longer attractive to my lens. I got hold of my phone, the coffee on my cup was already cold, it was just there staring at me while I dialed my assistant’s number. “ Hi sir, Mrs Barbara has already left. I think she should be at the airport now, or maybe have boarded a flight already. Jay said while hanging up the call. I ran my hands through my hair and exhaled slowly, “ I should feel a bit better, now that she is no longer in my life. But then, I was empty, a part of me was not comfortable and not complete. It seemed as if something was ripped off my body, but I couldn't fathom it. My laptop beeps twice, bringing my attention to the notification I got earlier. I manned up to open it, hmm!! It was my mom's, “ Hi !! Kingston, I assume that the plan went well. It was the right decision for us all. Barbara wasn't the right woman for our family. The Davis Dynasty wouldn't condone an unfruitful woman. Now that she is gone, please focus on Dokay and the child. That's what is best for the family.” I clenched my teeth, and held my fist so tightly, so this was not about me, it was all about power, legacy and control. Barbara was not just my wife, she was my friend, my companion. I loved her even though I never showed her a bigger percentage of that love. I couldn't help my memory, it kept repeating our conversation and thoughts about Barbara. I have an executive meeting with my staff at the Davis empire. This branch in Sydney needs a lot of work and reshuffling, the executive team needs my presence, the hotel for hospitality and management also needs their own reshuffling, a lot of work on my desk, I had to get dressed for today's meeting since it's a weekend, by the next work day everyone will be set and pick up from where they stopped. Then I sharply shut my computer, pushing away the disturbing thoughts that had been threatening my peace of mind, I said to myself, “ Kingston work, focus on work, the Davis Empire won't run itself and Sydney’s branch is in desperate need of your attention for restructure” the board , the investment all needs my attention. I stood stretching my body, and headed towards my walk-in closet. My reflection in the mirror caught my attention, my eyes were already gloomy, but yet I still had to look my very best to divert attention. The powerful billionaire everyone expected me to be but inside screams Chaos. I got hold of my tailored black suit, crisp white shirt and Rolex watch, got ready and made it downstairs. There my driver was already waiting. I slid into my Rolls-Royce leather seat and we headed to the road . My phone buzzed twice. I checked. It was a message from my personal Assistant“ Jay .” My right-hand man in the Davis Empire, Sydney Branch. “ Hi , Kingston, where are you? The board is waiting, and we received an unexpected visitor. They are investors from the Van-Daniel’s Group of Companies. They are interested in the Hospitality Sector, Sir , you might want to meet them personally.” “ Investors? Interesting, I will be there in 30 , Please prepare the team .” Maybe soaking up myself with work will make me feel better and forget about Barbara. By the time I arrived at the office, the tension in my heart had already settled. I was relieved. Then I entered the executive hall, everyone was seated waiting for the commencement of the meeting. Jay stood, greeting me with a firm nod. “ Welcome back Sir, please here," as he adjusted, making way for me to pass. We have a lot to cover, sir.” I sat down at the head of the table, my presence sending signals of authority and power. “Let's get down to business, I said.” We got through some official reports from our customers, the acquisition reports were also looked upon, the quarterly projects and the need for expansion was deliberated severely due to how urgent it seemed. The meeting went on for some hours, until we made decisions and everything was intact, then I asked Jay to bring in the investors. The Van-Daniel's Group of Companies solely deals with oil and gas. They are one of the leading companies in that sector, but we came first. The Davis Empire has stayed tall for decades of years. Now they want to invest in our hospitality sector. We would allow them because Business has to go on and money must be made.
