CHAPTER 12: THE LINE WE CROSSED

623 Words
My birthday arrived three days later. I had hoped it would be a normal day. The universe clearly had other plans. The moment I stepped onto campus, Lucas appeared out of nowhere carrying a small cake box and a ridiculous birthday hat. "No." "Yes." "No." "Absolutely yes." Before I could escape, Lucas pulled me into a hug. Students laughed around us while I rolled my eyes dramatically. "You're impossible." "And yet you keep me around." I laughed despite myself. Unfortunately, someone else witnessed the entire thing. Ethan. Standing across the courtyard. Watching. The smile disappeared from my face immediately. For one brief second, our eyes met. The warmth in his expression vanished. Then he turned and walked away. Just like that. The sight hurt more than I expected. The rest of the day became torture. Ethan ignored me completely. Not one glance. Not one conversation. Nothing. By evening, frustration had replaced disappointment. I was tired. Tired of his distance. Tired of his silence. Tired of pretending none of this mattered. I was leaving the library when someone suddenly called my name. "Lily." The voice stopped me instantly. My heartbeat betrayed me. Again. Ethan stood near the side entrance of the building. The area was quiet. Empty. Hidden from the rest of campus. His expression was impossible to read. "We need to talk." There it was again. That sentence. That dangerous sentence. Without waiting for an answer, he walked toward a secluded courtyard behind the building. I followed. Of course I followed. The moment we were alone, I crossed my arms. "What is your problem?" His jaw tightened. "My problem?" "Yes." The frustration I'd been carrying for days finally surfaced. "You disappear. You avoid me. Then you suddenly show up and act like nothing happened." The silence that followed was dangerous. Ethan stared at me. Long enough to make my pulse race. Then he laughed. Not because anything was funny. Because he was frustrated too. "Do you have any idea what you're doing to me?" The question stole the air from my lungs. For the first time, Ethan wasn't speaking like a professor. He wasn't speaking carefully. He wasn't hiding. He was simply being honest. And somehow that was far more dangerous. "What am I doing?" I whispered. His eyes never left mine. "You're making this impossible." My heart stopped. The distance between us suddenly felt too small. Too fragile. Too easy to break. Neither of us moved. Neither of us looked away. The silence stretched. Heavy with everything we'd been avoiding for weeks. Then Ethan stepped closer. One step. Then another. My breath caught. Every sensible thought disappeared. All I could hear was my heartbeat. All I could see was him. His eyes dropped briefly to my lips before returning to mine. The movement lasted only a second. Yet it changed everything. "Lily..." The way he said my name sounded almost painful. As though he was fighting himself. As though he already knew he was about to lose. And maybe he did. Because the next thing I knew, the distance between us disappeared. His hand gently cupped my face. Giving me every chance to stop him. Every chance to walk away. I didn't. Neither did he. The kiss was soft at first. Careful. Almost uncertain. Then all the weeks of tension, longing, jealousy, and unanswered questions seemed to collide at once. The world disappeared. The rules disappeared. Everything disappeared. Leaving only this moment. Only us. When we finally pulled apart, neither of us spoke. Because there was nothing left to say. The line had been crossed. And deep down, we both knew there was no going back. Then a sudden voice echoed from nearby. "Lily?" My eyes widened instantly. Lucas. TO BE CONTINUED...
