The smile on Claire's face refused to leave.
Lily hated it.
There was something unsettling about the way Claire looked at her.
Too confident.
Too certain.
As if she already knew how this conversation would end.
"Did Ethan ever tell you why our engagement ended?"
The question echoed inside Lily's mind.
"No."
Claire laughed softly.
The sound sent a chill down Lily's spine.
"Of course he didn't."
Anger immediately flared inside her.
"Then tell me."
For a brief moment, Claire looked almost pleased.
As though she had been waiting for this opportunity.
Waiting for Lily to ask.
"He left."
The answer came instantly.
Lily frowned.
"What?"
"He left me."
Claire's eyes became distant.
As though replaying an old memory.
"We were engaged for almost two years."
