The wind howled across the cracked plains of Myrradon, a barren region where even whispers were devoured by silence. Aiden tightened his cloak around his shoulders, the coarse wool doing little to repel the ghostly chill that gripped the land. Koro walked beside him in silence, his golden fur dimmed beneath a layer of dust, his eyes fixed on the horizon.
“I’ve never seen a place so… dead,” Aiden muttered.
“It was not always like this,” Koro said quietly, almost as if the land could still hear him.
They moved forward, boots and paws stirring up fine ash from a time long forgotten. Ancient ruins jutted from the earth like bones, half-sunken and scorched by ages past. Strange symbols etched into stone monoliths pulsed faintly, remnants of a magic that once ruled these lands.
Aiden reached out to touch one.
“Don’t,” Koro warned sharply.
The boy flinched. “Why?”
“Because some memories are better left untouched.”
They pressed on, weaving through the spectral remnants of a world once vibrant. The setting sun cast long shadows, and just as twilight took the sky, Koro stopped. His ears twitched. “We rest here.”
Aiden dropped to the ground with relief. “Good. My legs are staging a rebellion.”
Koro chuckled softly. “They’ll have to learn endurance.”
As the fire sparked to life, crackling and casting flickering light across their faces, Aiden noticed the faraway look in Koro’s eyes.
“What happened here, Koro?”
The fox didn’t answer right away. Instead, he lay down beside the flames and stared into them, his voice low and distant when he finally spoke.
“It began long before your time, before even the Veil was woven. Do you want to know the truth?”
Aiden nodded. “Yes.”
Koro sighed. “Then listen… but know that once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.”

Flashback: The Tale of the Gold-Fur
Koro wasn’t always a guide. Once, he was a warrior.
In the time before silence blanketed Myrradon, it was a vibrant realm of scholars, warriors, and sorcerers. Koro was born into the Crescent Fang—an elite order of vulpine guardians chosen by the Aetherborn to defend the balance of magic in the realms. They were gifted with heightened senses, and the rarest among them bore golden fur, a sign of destiny.
Koro was the youngest to ascend the Crescent Trials. Agile, wise beyond his years, and wielding an uncanny connection to Essence, he was revered not just as a guardian—but as the next Grand Fang.
But power comes with price.
The Veil, the invisible fabric separating the world of mortals from the chaotic Underreach, had begun to fray. Something ancient stirred beneath it, whispering to those who dared listen. Among the Crescent Fang, one heard the call—Koro’s mentor, Master Thal. Driven by ambition, Thal sought to merge Aether and Relic magic to breach the Veil, believing he could harness the chaos beyond.
Koro discovered his plan too late. Thal had already torn a rift. The moment it opened, darkness spilled out—voidspawn with fanged maws and eyes like burning coal. Myrradon was the first to fall.
In the battle that followed, Koro led a last stand. Buildings collapsed, skies bled, and the earth split open. Thal, consumed by his hubris, transformed into something monstrous—no longer fox, no longer flesh.
Koro struck him down, but not without cost. Essence scorched his soul. He had been touched by the Void.
“I survived,” Koro whispered. “But I lost everything. My people. My name. My peace.”
Back at the fire, Aiden sat silent. The revelation weighed on him.
“And now you guide me,” he said.
“Yes. Because you remind me of what we lost… and what we must never lose again.”

Back to the Present
Dawn broke across the deadlands. Aiden rose, his mind still reeling.
They pressed on toward a hill where a spire of obsidian pierced the sky.
“That’s the Temple of Resonance,” Koro said. “Inside is the Echo Prism. It will help you unlock your connection to the Veil.”
As they approached, the air thickened. They crossed into a field of obsidian glass, their reflections moving slower than reality.
Suddenly—movement.
A swirling form burst from beneath the mirrored earth. A wraithlike sentinel, all bone and ember, lunged at Aiden.
“DOWN!” Koro shouted.
Aiden dropped as Koro launched himself at the creature, fangs bared. They tumbled across the field, claws and magic colliding. Aiden scrambled up and instinctively reached out.
For a second, time slowed. He saw the creature’s core—a swirling knot of Essence corrupted by Relic energy.
“Koro—strike its center!”
Koro didn't hesitate. He twisted mid-leap, driving his claws deep into the core. A burst of light exploded, scattering the creature into ash.
Breathing hard, they regrouped.
“You saw its core,” Koro said. “You’re changing.”
Aiden nodded, hands trembling. “I felt… something. Like a rhythm behind everything.”
“That’s the pulse of the Veil.”
They climbed the final steps to the temple. Inside, the Echo Prism floated above a dais of ancient runes.
Aiden stepped forward. The crystal pulsed.
Visions flooded him—of Koro’s past, of Thal’s betrayal, of something darker beyond the Veil… waiting.
When he opened his eyes, he was crying.
“Now you know,” Koro said.
Aiden turned. “Then let’s finish what you started.”
