Jessica’s Awakening

1191 Words
It started in the rain. Jessica stood alone beneath the eaves of the Elemental Academy’s highest spire, eyes raised toward the slate sky. Rain pattered softly on the stone ledge and slid down her cloak in silver rivulets. Every drop carried a message, like whispers from another world. Since the encounter with Elyndra, something inside her had begun to stir, something deeper than her bond with Aira, her Wind Elemental. Behind her, Clara and Ray watched from the archway, hesitant to interrupt the quiet reverence of the moment. "She's been standing there for over an hour," Ray muttered, shifting his weight. "That’s got to be unhealthy. Her legs are going to fossilize." Clara didn’t move her gaze. "Let her be. She’s listening." To what? "A weather podcast?" Ray asked. Clara shot him a look. "To everything." Jessica barely registered their voices. Each raindrop felt like a word, each gust of wind like a breath from something ancient. Ever since Elyndra touched her hand during their last trial, the storm hadn't just been weather; it had been a song. A rhythm echoing in her veins. As if on cue, thunder cracked the sky open. Lightning flashed, illuminating Jessica's form, and then the rain paused. Literally. The drops froze mid-fall around her, suspended like glittering diamonds. Jessica’s breath caught in her throat. Did I... do that? Aira’s voice, ever calm and ethereal, whispered in her mind. You are touching the edge of another path. Reach inward. Beyond wind. Into water. Jessica’s fingers curled slightly. She closed her eyes. And the world fell away. She landed not with a crash, but with a ripple. Jessica found herself standing in knee-deep water that glowed with its own inner light. It stretched endlessly in all directions like a quiet ocean beneath a starlit dome. The air smelled of salt and possibility, and the stars above shimmered in slow, silent motion like they were breathing. This place... is beautiful. Her voice echoed softly, swallowed by the stillness. In the distance, a figure emerged—tall, fluid, and regal. Her skin shimmered like moonlight on waves, her hair rippling like sea foam. She seemed woven from water and starlight. "I am Nerida," the woman said, her voice a tide that washed through Jessica's thoughts. "You have awakened me." Jessica blinked, heart pounding. "I... I’m bonded to Aira. To Air. Why am I here?" Nerida stepped closer. "Because you are more than one path. Air is freedom. Water is truth. Both adapt. Both shift." Jessica frowned, unsure. "I don’t understand." "You will." The surrounding sea pulsed like a heartbeat. Nerida extended her hand toward Jessica. "Accept me, and you will gain the power to vanish, not to hide, but to see with clarity. To slip through what binds others. But first, you must face your own reflection." Before Jessica could reply, the water beneath her began to bubble and rise, solidifying into a perfect mirror. Her reflection stared back, wearing a cocky smirk, arms crossed. Jessica groaned. "Oh! Great. Sassy-Me." The reflection tilted her head. "You think you're ready for more power, but you still doubt yourself. You hide behind jokes and clever words." "That’s not true," Jessica retorted. "It is. You fear being seen. Being vulnerable. That’s why you seek invisibility." Jessica stepped forward, her jaw tight. I joked because that’s how I survived. If you knew half of what I’ve gone through— "I do," the reflection cut in. "I am you." Jessica paused. She inhaled deeply. "Maybe I am scared. But I’m still standing here, aren’t I? I didn’t run. I never run, not from pain, not from people, not from power. So yeah, I joke. But I feel everything. That’s why I need this." Sassy-Me tilted her head. "You’re learning. That’s why you’re ready." The mirror shattered into light. Nerida’s eyes glowed like twin tides under moonlight. "You have passed." Back at the spire, the rain resumed, but around Jessica, it parted in a perfect circle. She stood with her eyes closed, water swirling softly around her feet, but not a drop touching her. Her cloak fluttered, not from the wind, but from some subtle current now flowing within her. She was no longer just a vessel of air; she was something else. Something more. Ray gawked. "Is she... dry? In a storm?" Clara nodded slowly. "She did it. She’s awakened to something new." Jessica opened her eyes. For a moment, they shimmered with hues of both sky and sea. She raised her hand, and a ribbon of water slithered from the air, wrapping her wrist like a living bracelet. Then she vanished. Ray screamed. "Jess?! Ghost Jess, is that you?!" Jessica reappeared behind him. "Boo." He jumped so high he nearly slipped on the rain-slicked stone. Clara laughed, shaking her head. "You never change." Jessica grinned, the shimmer still in her eyes. "I can control the water. And turn invisible. It’s not just stealth, it’s slipping between moments. Like mist through cracks." In her mind, Aira and Nerida spoke in unison. Together, we move as one. Seen and unseen. Jessica felt the dual presence swirling within her—air and water, freedom and clarity. They weren’t at odds. They danced together. That evening, Jessica sat on the Academy’s outer wall, staring out over the ocean. The stars above mirrored the shimmer in the sea below. Clara joined her in silence. No teasing. No mission talk. Just two friends under starlight. "Are you okay?" Clara finally asked. Jessica nodded. "For the first time in a while... yeah." "You were amazing today," Clara said. Jessica smiled, but there was a softness behind it. "It wasn’t just about power. It was about honesty. I’ve been hiding behind sarcasm like its armor. But I can’t protect people if I’m always trying to deflect. If I’m always trying to disappear." "You’re not invisible to us, Jess," Clara assured her. Jessica exhaled. "I know. I think I just needed to stop hiding from myself." In the map chamber of the Academy, star-charts pulsed softly, lighting the table with a celestial glow. Clara hovered over one chart, tracing her finger toward an ominous sea-bound region. "The Devil of the Seven Seas is gathering strength. His storms are growing unnatural. And the sea itself is... whispering." Ray entered, tossing a fire orb between his hands. "We’re going straight into cursed ocean territory, aren’t we?" Jessica leaned over the map. Her expression was calm but resolute. "We can’t wait. We strike before he grows stronger." Ray looked at her and blinked. "You’re... really zen now. Did you get enlightened or just waterlogged?" Jessica smirked. "Maybe both." Clara chuckled. "Whatever happened, it’s working." Jessica's eyes drifted toward the stars as they realigned above them, forming an ancient constellation once lost to myth: The Veiled Wave. Clara whispered, "A new realm is calling." Jessica stepped forward, already halfway to the door. Her voice was steady. "Then let’s answer it." Ray followed, grumbling but loyal. "I swear, if we run into more creepy sea ghosts, I’m sitting this one out." Clara raised a brow. "You say that every time." Jessica laughed. "Let’s go make some waves."
