14 Devil's Fortress

1038 Words
The fortress loomed ahead, dark, jagged, and menacing, as if it had been torn straight from the sea's fury. Barnacle-encrusted spires jutted toward the sky, and sentries wielding glowing harpoons prowled the walls. A faint magical shimmer coated the stone, eldritch wards that pulsed with the Devil’s presence. Jessica reappeared briefly to relay instructions. Ray, you’re on distraction duty. Something loud. But make it, you know, heroic. He squinted. So, fireworks or interpretive dance? Whichever involves less flailing. Clara, you’re with me. We’re taking the vents. Clara raised an eyebrow. Seriously? Vents? Jessica grinned. Every evil lair has one. It’s a villain architectural staple. Ray groaned. Fine. But if I get impaled, I’m haunting you all as the Cheeseburger Wraith. Jessica and Clara, cloaked in a thin veil of mist, slipped through a cracked coral tunnel Splashy had uncovered earlier. Inside, the air was damp and vibrating with magical energy, like the whole fortress was breathing. Dim coral lights glowed on the walls, illuminating carvings of drowned kings, sea serpents, and symbols far older than language. Jessica closed her eyes, extending her senses. Three guards, just ahead. Clara nodded. We take them down. Silently. Jessica smirked. My favorite kind of takedown. She vanished in a shimmer of mist. Seconds later, the guards were unconscious, slumped neatly on the floor. Clara blinked, impressed. You’ve really stepped up your ninja game. Jessica reappeared, brushing her hands off. What can I say? I learn fast. They continued deeper into the fortress, weaving past leaking pipes, rusted nets, and barnacle-clustered walls. A glowing schematic carved into a side passage caught Clara’s attention. The central chamber’s that way, she murmured. But there’s a generator room nearby. It powers the wards. Jessica’s eyes lit up. Then we make a little pit stop. Never too late for sabotage. Clara smiled. Now you’re talking. Outside, Ray had opted for chaos. He’d found a stash of confiscated fireworks, probably taken from smugglers, and lit the entire crate at once. Just before launching them, he scrawled BOOM JUSTICE on one of the rockets and slapped it onto the fuse. With a thunderous explosion, the night lit up in brilliant color. Guards scattered, shouting orders and tripping over each other. One attempted to form a water shield and instead soaked a nearby officer. Another shrieked and ran in circles. Ray stood at the center of the madness, a jellyfish helmet askew on his head, waving a sparkler. Fear the rainbow wrath, he yelled. I have glow sticks and bad decisions. A guard lunged at him, only to be smacked in the face with a crackling wand. Fireworks. Nature’s way of saying subtlety is overrated, Ray muttered. Back inside, Jessica and Clara reached a massive coral chamber etched with ancient runes. In its center pulsed a swirling vortex of black and indigo, the Gate of Tides. The room was colder, the air thick with salt and tension. The portal throbbed like a heartbeat gone wrong. That’s it, Clara whispered. The Devil’s link to the Sea of Shadows. Jessica narrowed her eyes. It feels... aware. The water rippled around them. From the darkness stepped a figure. Kai. His eyes glowed with raw magic. Black sea armor clung to him like a second skin, and scales shimmered along his arms. He looked different—stronger, colder. Like the sea had carved the last of the warmth from him. You shouldn’t have come, he said, voice distant and distorted by power. Clara’s heart sank. Kai, we can help you. You don’t have to do this. He hesitated for a heartbeat. I was never one of you. The ocean showed me truth. Jessica stepped forward, voice firm. Then let’s see how that truth holds up to a bit of trickery. She vanished. The chamber exploded into motion. Clara flung beams of searing light as Kai summoned crashing waves. He fought like a storm, unrelenting, wild, and precise. Water obeyed his will, rising in spirals and blades. Jessica blinked in and out of view, cutting across the room in misty bursts. Kai spun, deflecting a water s***h from Jessica. You think shadows and games will stop me? I don’t need to stop you, she said, panting. Just annoy you until someone else does. Kai raised a trident, energy building. Then Splashy launched himself from Jessica’s satchel and shot a burst of water at Kai’s feet. It wasn’t strong, but it was enough. He slipped. Kai fell hard, grunting in surprise. Clara blinked. Did... did Splashy just trip him? Jessica grinned. He’s a menace in miniature. Kai growled, trying to rise, but Clara’s light slammed into his chest, pinning him to the floor. Jessica darted in and tapped his forehead with two fingers. Nap time, Prince Tidal. The portal behind them pulsed erratically. Its edges frayed, bleeding energy. Runes cracked and dissolved. The room began to shake. We have to move, Clara yelled, staggering as water burst from a crumbling wall. Jessica looked at Kai’s unconscious form, then cursed under her breath and grabbed him. Ray stumbled in, singed, covered in glitter, and wide-eyed. What did I miss? Clara didn’t stop running. Everything. Ray looked down at Kai. Can we keep the trident? Just to hang on a wall or something? Later, Jessica shouted. Move. The chamber collapsed in a cacophony of seawater and magic. The vortex imploded, dragging everything inward. The sea roared as it consumed the heart of the fortress, swallowing its secrets into the deep. They emerged on the shore moments later, soaked and panting. Moonlight shimmered on the waves, and the stars blinked overhead, distant and indifferent. Kai lay bound beside them, still breathing. Clara sat next to him, eyes troubled. Ray flopped onto the sand. Okay. New rule. No more vents. Or explosives. Or sea monsters. Or anything that pulses. Jessica lay beside him, Splashy curling up on her shoulder with a triumphant blub. She looked at her friends, then at the endless ocean. We’re not done yet. Clara nodded, her gaze fixed on the horizon. But we hit them where it hurt. The fortress was gone. The Devil still waited, deeper and darker than ever before. But Jessica had her powers, her team, her courage, and Splashy. Let him come.
