I rolled back onto my stomach as chunk after chunk of mountain stone rained down. Sharp, jagged wings flapped everywhere as the high-pitched screams echoed at an unheard of frequency. It was all so visceral I wasn’t sure what would break me first—the rocks, or the screeching wails that made my brain feel like it was about to implode. After a minute that seemed like an eternity the train emerged on the other side of the mountain—freeing me from the nightmare. When the transport exited the tunnel the bats followed, ejecting into the night sky.
