Truth The first thing he was aware of was that it was unusually quiet. Brix strained his ears for the sound of voices or of anything before he opened his eyes, but everything was muffled. He took a deep breath, and immediately knew where he was. Slowly turning his head to the side, he peeked between his lashes. He faced a window, its mini-blinds half-drawn against the glare. A few inches from his face was the bed railing. He reached up to press the button to summon a nurse but stopped. Chances were someone would be checking on him pretty soon, if only to take his vitals.
