Chapter 4

Why did I even respond that strongly? I turned around on the bed and went back to sleep. I shut my eyes, feeling like a complete i***t. Suddenly, it dawned on me, and I jumped to my feet: "Wait a minute! What am I doing in YOUR hospital room?" While I was processing my thoughts, Morris said with a wry smile, "You realised it now! Haha, actually I had you shifted here. Since you saved my life! So as a small gesture of my thanks I paid for all your hospital bills and since this is a VIP ward, you'll get proper VIP attention here." I haven't spoken to another male since I was 10 years old, so I said, "Thank you Alpha, I mean Morris!" while twiddling my fingers. And here I was, sharing a room with one, having my first proper and cordial encounter with one! I tried to persuade him to transfer me by saying, "But I don't need such favours; I just fulfilled my duty..." Again he interrupted me in the middle of a thought: "Pretty please, let me at least do this much for you. Also, I heard you don't have any relatives in this town, so let me take care of you through your recovery." His grin was the purest and most genuine I'd ever seen outside of a fairy tale. The grin made me realise that things really were looking up. Now that he was so near and alert, I could make out more detail in his eyes; they were a handsome grey that went well with the rest of his features. His jawline was distinct without making his face look lifeless. A clipped beard and a tanned face only accentuated his attractiveness. "I wonder what his wolf looks like?"' When Morris saw me staring at him, he exclaimed, "Am I that handsome? Don't look at me like that I get embarrassed" with a juvenile grin that made me involuntarily pull my face away from him like an ashamed teenage girl. He said, "What's with that expression now!?" With a quizzical grin on my face, I responded, "Nothing really! It's just you." He responded with "Ouch! that stings" while putting his palm to his chest like a teen girl. My eyes rolled as I rolled them away from the screen in disgust. Morris invited the unexpected visitors inside after hearing a knock on the door. One female cop and one male officer in uniform entered, followed by what appeared to be the team's chief. They came in step towards us and paused in the middle of the room. When Morris inquired, "What is it, chief Joe? Did you find anything?" I knew he didn't like to extend significant matters. I didn't get the significance of the chief's gesture to the female officer and her response, "No, but we have other important information," as he handed the papers to Morris. She stepped forward and instantly cuffed my hands behind my back. Hey!I said, "What the heck is going on here?I had an inkling as to what it was about, but I didn't think it would come so soon. Ignoring me, the chief turned to Morris and said, "We checked the bloodstains on John Walter's body as well as the stains that this girl Estella had on her" (meaning me). "The blood and flesh samples found on Estella were of John Walter's." The blood we discovered on John's body matched hers, therefore we assume that he died as a result of a fight between the two of them. We've come to arrest Estella, who we believe is responsible for this murder." Morris shuffled his feet a little more and read carefully as he listened to the chief and glanced over the reports. My heart sank; this is precisely what I had feared; I should have told Morris sooner, but it's too late now. "How could you possibly be so certain of that?"I looked at Morris, perplexed, wondering what he was thinking, as he inquired. To the chief, Morris said, "If you look at this report properly, it says there were DNA samples of two different wolves on John's body." Morris proceeded to flip through the papers until he found the one he was looking for. Estella's DNA is in one of the vials, but the other one doesn't match anyone, and it says 'DEATH BY BLOOD LOSS' right here, so we can't just start locking people up without knowing who they are. Right, boss?" With a reassuring grin on his face, Morris said to me, "Estella is a patient, till she heals you should focus on this other half of the information." Head hung low in disapproval, the chief turned to the female officer standing next to me and said, "Let her go and make sure to keep an officer stationed outside 24/7." He then turned to Morris and said, "You be careful Morris, you might have brought a snake inside your den." Yes Joe, Thank you for your concern," Morris said with a sly grin, "and he waved them goodbye. The commander and his men abruptly turned and departed. I nodded and muttered, "Thank you," but Morris's forehead was furrowing deeply in thinking. 'I shouldn't procrastinate any longer, Morris is suspicious of me as well now!' I thought, 'It's already late, whatever I say could be interpreted as an excuse, 'But if it goes any farther than this it would get very hard for me to reveal the truth!' Fearfully, I mustered the strength to address Morris, and I said, "Ehm... Morris, there's something I have to tell you. He looked at me expectantly as though he were waiting for me to go on, so I did: "I know who attacked you back there!" I know it's hard to put your trust in me because I'm a newcomer to the pack, but you need to know the truth." Morris touched the button in his palm, blinked at me as if to beg me to stop talking, and then ushered in his personal security with the following instructions: "Don't send anyone in for some time and disable the CCTV inside the room." As you wish, sir!"The guard straightened up, and then he and the other intruders left the room and locked the door. When Morris finally spoke, I turned around and said, "Actually, I have been meaning to confirm some things from you, I was just waiting for you to start the conversation!""
