SUMMER Monday came too fast. I had not been ready for the weekend to end. With Maya and Alex around, I spent the weekend with board games and bad movies and three of us falling asleep talking about nothing and everything all at once. It was great. I felt like I was being… a person. But of course, the weekend had to end and I had Hearthstone Prep on Monday. I made it through first period. I made it through second. By third, I was settling back into the rhythm of school, slowly and carefully. Maddox was at his desk behind me when I walked into chemistry. He looked up when I sat down. He smiled — the careful, public version, the under-wraps version, the one that did not announce anything to anyone watching. His eyes did the small private thing they did, just for me. "Hi," he murmured.
