ZANE POV How to act recklessly in a day. Simple. Destroy the living source that binds the dark world together. The itch in my Fang to make my father restless after killing my mother became more dangerous after I turned teenage. That’s what humans called it, perhaps. Ah… humans… The thought back then of living with humans made my blood boil. Yet here I am… talking directly to one. “You didn’t tell me where you came from,” the petite blonde lady asked flirtatiously. I didn’t reply. Instead, I read her thoughts — dirty secrets. The vision appeared: her stripped naked while banging some dude, then being interrupted by some lady. The lady looked exactly like her. “Edner!” the woman yelled in shock. Edner. That was her name. Apparently, the man she was f*****g was her sister’s fiancé. Rich, I uttered in my mind. And they call vampires and witches evil. “Mr. Lowe,” she tugged my sleeve again — nails polite, voice honey-silk. The motion made the idea of sinking my teeth into her suddenly very tempting. But that came to a halt the moment her voice cut in like a blade. “Edner,” Kianna called, her eyes sharp. “Don’t you have other things to do than to distract my bodyguard?” Distract? I looked at her — really looked. The sight of her was unholy in my eyes. A denim skirt with a fitting corset that brought the view of her boobs to show. Fuck. My fangs ached the moment I stared at her bare neck. Edner muttered something under her breath and left, heels clicking away like a retreating heartbeat. Silence followed — the heavy kind that clung to skin. I should’ve ignored it. Should’ve ignored her. But Kianna’s gaze held mine — steady, daring. She was irritated. I liked her irritated. It was easy to read her mind. “What are you doing?” she finally asked. I almost laughed at how calm and certain she sounded, like I didn’t disturb her memories last night. “My job.” She raised that perfect brow of hers. “Your job doesn’t involve you flirting around my maids.” God, I hated her voice. “Is that an excuse just to say you’re jealous?” She opened her mouth to retaliate. “Or you can just simply mind your business and act like a f*****g billionaire’s daughter.” At this point, I could picture myself tearing down her throat. But I had to be calm, at least for a while. I came through this family with manipulation — and that’s how I would get out. Yet my trick doesn’t work on this b***h. A deafening slap landed on my cheek, but I didn’t budge. Neither did I feel anything. I looked at her — her face red with rage — and it amused me how easily I got under her skin, just like any other human. “f**k you,” she spat. Oh, you wish. “What’s going on here?” her father came in, and just like the first time I met him in the bar, I got in his head. A silent war of eyes went on between me and Kianna. She looked almost fuckable with that attitude. “Nothing, sir,” I responded. Kianna stormed toward the driveway, her heels clicking like gunfire on marble. Her scent — warm, wild, laced with fury — hung in the air even after she was gone. I could still taste it. Anger. Embarrassment. Defiance. Humans bled emotions faster than vampires bled victims. Her father turned to me, suspicion clouding his features. Mr. Dreyson — one of the richest men in the city — but beneath that perfect suit, he reeked of deceit and guilt. I’d met men like him all my life — ones who smiled like kings but slept like cowards. “You seem to be causing a lot of chaos for someone who was hired to protect my daughter,” he said smoothly. His tone was cold, precise — the kind that could slice your throat without raising a hand. I offered a polite smirk. “I didn’t realize protecting her included avoiding conversations.” “Protecting her,” he repeated, eyes narrowing. “That’s all you’re here for, Mr. Lowe. Not to interfere with her life. Not to make her angry.” Angry? She slapped me. That wasn’t anger — that was passion restrained. I said nothing. He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Whatever your past is, I don’t care. But I’ll warn you once — if you so much as touch her in any way that isn’t required for her safety—” I let out a dark laugh, one that echoed through the marble hall. “You think I’m interested in your precious daughter?” His jaw tightened. “A man like you doesn’t work as a bodyguard unless he’s hiding something.” He wasn’t wrong. “I’ll make sure she gets to campus safely,” I said flatly. “That’s all you need to know.” He didn’t reply — just gave me that disapproving, human glare before turning away. Humans were predictable. They feared what they didn’t understand — but they trusted it when it came in the form of control. By the time I reached the car, Kianna was already seated in the backseat, arms crossed, eyes glued to her phone. Her lips pressed into a tight line. The driver’s seat was mine, but her glare made the whole car feel like a battlefield. “Your father worries too much,” I said, sliding into the seat. “Don’t talk about my father,” she shot back instantly. “Just drive.” I started the engine, letting the growl of the car fill the silence. The gates opened, and the mansion faded behind us — replaced by long roads and sunlight that made her hair glow like a curse I couldn’t shake. She kept her distance, her attention on the window. But her reflection in the glass betrayed her — I could see her eyes dart toward me every now and then, sharp and quick. “You don’t have to look so tense,” I said lazily. “You might actually make it through a car ride without hating me.” “I don’t hate you,” she muttered. “Good,” I said. “That makes one of us.” She turned, eyes narrowing. “You think I care what you feel?” “No,” I smirked. “But your pulse says otherwise.” She stiffened. Her heartbeat — fast, uncertain — was music to my ears. “And how can you dictate my pulse?” Naive, human. “I don’t,” I lied. “I just guessed.” She frowned at me through the rearview mirror before scoffing. After what felt like an eternity, I hit the brake, stopping at the entrance of a mountain-sized building — one that screamed wealth to humans. But to me? To the underworld? It was merely anything. The moment she stepped out of the car, as did I… I felt a shift. My second senses bloomed — my dark side. It only occurs when there’s magical elements involved… or around. I scanned the flocking humans staring at Kianna — well, mostly at me — with awe and whispers. I could read their minds, yet I didn’t, because their thoughts were already written on their faces. I fought the urge to laugh at their stupid “Who’s that guy?” expressions. If only they knew who stood in their midst — who stood beside the daughter of the richest man in the human realm — maybe their mouths wouldn’t be so quick to ask such disastrous questions. “Lowe,” Kianna’s voice dragged my attention back to her. Though it wasn’t entirely her fault — her perfume made it really hard for my attention to waver from her. “Do not follow me.” Her eyes lowered, clearly flustered by how much attention was on her. It made me wonder how confusing she was. Daughter of a well-honored man in the States — of course everyone’s attention would be on her, with or without my presence. She looked meek. I loathed it. “That’s my job,” I replied emptily. She turned to face me, her face full of fury. “Your job is to keep me safe, not follow me like a lapdog.” “I am protecting you… by being close to you at all times, princess—” “Stop calling me that name,” she whisper-yelled, making a smirk creep onto my face. She sighed, calming down the rage I built in her less than a second ago. “Fine… just stay away from me. Keep a five-meter distance away from me.” “Is that an order or a command?” I asked. The word had a bitter aftertaste on my tongue — yet amusing. If only she knew I could f**k her here if I wanted to. “Both.” She flicked her hair, strutting down meekly inside the building — like she didn’t make my blood boil. My eyes followed her movement, trailing down to her waist, scoffing at how intimidated she was by everyone’s eyes — and not by mine. She was fire and ice. Powerful, more than anyone could imagine for a human. Trust me when I say this… I have seen evil heiresses. f****d them. Manipulated them. Yet no one has gotten under my skin the way a twenty-year-old did. Just when I thought I should let it slide — keep my eyes to myself — darkness enveloped my senses again. My eyes immediately dragged toward her again. She wasn’t alone. Talking to a lean, blonde-haired guy. Witch, it screamed. What the f**k is a witch doing in a human school? He sensed me — the way his eyes locked on mine proved it. A devilish grin plastered on his face. And just then, he leaned forward… to kiss her on the cheek.
